Why? Toronto is a team on the rise. They have a good young lineup, a good young rotation, arguably the best minor league system in baseball and after some salary dumping moves (Vernon Wells) they have money to spend. Fielder, Bautista, Lawrie and Lind would make a crazy-scary middle of the batting order.

Geez, I hope that guy is wrong obviously.

Meh.

I'd much rather have Pujols than Fielder... unless Fielder's fatness keeps teams from offering more than 5 years.

It's not that Fielder would prefer those teams, it's that a Boras client would have his list narrowed down so much this early in the offseason.

EDIT: And that such news would be broken by a random Cleveland radio guy.

Exactly. Boras will want the maximum number of perceived suitors right up to the moment the contract is signed.

Ah. I see what you're saying. I thought you meant he wouldn't be interested in those teams or vice versa. Carry on. #-o

If albert pujols wants to beat $200M 9-yr cardinals offer, he should produce birth certificate. skepticism abounds over 31 claim [Ed. unless he doesn't]

This is actually my biggest reservation with Albert. Firstly being that even if he is as old as he says, I really don't like the idea of signing ANYONE into their 40's, even Albert. I do appreciate the argument that it's still a worthwhile contract if you're overpaying for him in his later years, but I just feel like that will end up being wasteful at some point, especially as the Cubs are probably a couple years from contending.

Second, part of me would definitely be amused if Albert ended up getting the Obama treatment from the sports media.

You should have stopped at Lawrie. Lind is a worse, left-handed Soriano. His OPS+ has been under 100 for the past 2 seasons.

The first three would be really good, though.

The main problem I see with this report on Fielder is that there is always a "surprise" team bidding and once that's revealed, then a "mystery" team enters the bidding as well. Boras won't let Prince box himself in too early. And this is still extremely early, because Pujols hasn't even signed yet.

Pujols has made eleventy billion dollars in his career thus far. If he can't get a decent fake birth certificate, his agent sucks.

Seriously. If Obama was able to get one, Albert should with no trouble.

(I kid!)

After signing Reyes, Marlins will now get agressive with signing Pujols, according to Stark. They have an offer out to Wilson as well. Damn, is it possible they get all 3?

The Marlins are pondering a pursuit if everyone, and making half-assed offers in hopes they'll accept cause their new stadium is super neat and worth the several dozen million dollars they'll be leaving on the table to sign elsewhere, all in an attempt to show their fan base they want to win

boy, the marlins are taking this ruse of pretending to try to sign big-time free agents pretty seriously.

Oh boy, here we go.........Danny Knobbler of CBSSports says we'll offer Pujols a shorter term deal with more money per year to try and lure him away from the Cards.

Matt Loede of 92.3 The Fan in Cleveland reports that Prince Fielder has narrowed his choices of where he will sign this offseason to the Blue Jays, Rangers and Brewers, with the Blue Jays thought to be the favorites.

The report is rather obscure, so take it with a big grain of salt. If Loede is correct, then we would have to think Fielder would essentially be down to the Blue Jays and Rangers, as the Brewers don't look to be willing to go past a six-year, $120 million offer, which almost surely will not be enough. The Nationals, Cubs and Marlins have also been linked to Fielder.

Per rotoworld. I'd be fairly shocked if this were the case.

Sorry, not how Boras operates. All big money teams are equally in the mix whether they have interest or not.

Yeah, I think it changed to "other teams" from when I first saw it. Or maybe I'm already in "see what I want to see" mode. Either way, offer him 7/200 and see what happens.

They also have Rasmus and Snider, both are still young with high ceilings.

Still doesn't mean that they are seriously trying to sign him. I would think the number of years is likely more important to Pujols as long as the AAV is in the same range. So offering him less years would likely cause him to decline the offer, but at the same time having an offer with a higher AAV would probably be used by his agent to get the Cardinals to raise their offer.

I dunno maybe I'm just a skeptic. Would love it if true though.

In the end, even if we miss out on him, if we offer him something like 7/200 and it makes the Cards spend another 20 or 30 mill on him, it's still a good thing. I'm starting to wonder if the Marlins won't do that for us though anyway.

Other teams believe Cubs will try for Pujols, but only with shorter term offer with high AAV (avg $ per yr)

I am so incredibly on board with this.

Pujols, most likely, is not.
