Asked this in another thread but didn't get an answer and I'm still curious...

Somebody posted that free agents don't have to formally file anymore, they just become free agents automatically. What used to happen if a player, for whatever reason, didn't formally file for free agency?

i would think fielder is a realistic option as well as a more attractive option for what the cubs are going to try to build for. for the cubs to even have a shot at albert, they'd have to make a lot of drastic moves before signing him. he is in the downswing of his career and he's looking to make the playoffs almost every year he suits up.

right now the cubs cannot offer him that.

fielder is 27, and if it took the cubs 2 years to make the playoffs, would still only be 29. i think that theo will explore albert, but i highly doubt he goes after him. he will remain in st.louis.

Hahaha, this article tries to tell us that the Cardinals would still be contenders without Pujols:

that's not unrealistic. pujols was great last year, but he wasn't 1.050 OPS albert, and they still made the playoffs without wainwright. wouldn't the return of wainright offset the .915 OPS or whatever that labert gave them last year?

then again, you probably can't expect berkman to duplicate his 2011 season

What about the Brewers then? Without Fielder can they still make it to the playoffs. I mean they still have Braun.

Whether the Cards w/o Pujols or the Brewers w/o Fielder will be good could depend a lot on how good the Cubs are and what they do this offseason. Combine the fact that the Cards and Brewers will be not as good if they lose their 1B with their competition (Cubs) improving could make things interesting. Now if the Cubs sign one of Pujols/Fielder, you not only take wins off of one of those teams, but add it to the Cubs.

the brewers won 96 games. how many wins is fielder worth? they should still be good with gallardo/greinke/marcum and a decent offense.

They won't be bad at all, but they were a 90 win pythagorean team that won't have any payroll flexibility, even without Fielder. Plus I don't think they can count on getting 155 starts from their Top 5 SP like they did this year(including 95 from Greinke/Marcum/Gallardo), which is just an insane number.

Their top 3 have been pretty healthy throughout their careers, so it's not insane to think they won't make roughly 30 starts each next year again. Plus Greinke won't be as unlucky as he was last year. If Gamels can put up around a .800 OPS at first (certainly possible), they're probably not losing much from this year overall and still the best team in the division even without Fielder.

I really don't see Pujols going back to St. Louis. One only needs to look at the entirety of his time in St. Louis and the money he has made, and then compare it to Matt Holliday's current contract with St. Louis.

It is Pujols' time to be paid, and unless St. Louis is ready to pony up the big cash that they've been lucky enough to avoid all of this time, I don't see him going back.

There will be no team signed Cardinals WS ball available for fans. Pujols wanted too much, made ball cost prohibitive.

Of the two I think he's much more likely to return to his team than Fielder. StL can afford it, he's obviously the most iconic player there in decades.

Can they actually afford him, though? If they could, it never should have gotten to the point it is now. I'm not big on predictions, but this is one I'm pretty comfortable betting on.

I think they can, but may be unwilling, as it would stress their payroll much moreso than it would stress a bigger payroll team.

best case scneario is that we sign one of them, and the other signs with an AL team (rangers?). that would be the trifecta. both st. louis and milwaukee lose an elite hitter, and we gain one.

Why do they have to make drastic upgrades before signing Pujols? What if Pujols is just the one that gets the ball rolling?

they have to make drastic upgrades because the cubs lineup and pitching, if they were to make zero upgrades, is not something that is going to challenge for a world series. you guys have all said it yourself how far away the current cub team is.

and i can tell you this, if st.louis does lose albert, we will go after a big ticket free agent of sorts. be it fielder, reyes as some have suggested (but i do not want reyes anywhere close to the team).

pujols will be back in a cards uniform. its just a matter of time to set the market.

Sooo...

No articles telling us Theo was on the phone with Pujols at 12:01 EST last night? I'm kinda disappointed.

Fielder/Pujols would be a drastic upgrade.

No, but they're both meeting tonight at my house over pizza and beer. ;)
