Remember when the NFL got ripped for moving MNF to cable?

I admittedly do not watch the vast majority of MNF games, and I'm usually out when I do. Sitting at home watching NO/Atl was one of the most painful experiences I have ever had watching a sporting event. I'm not sure you can top that booth.

The Thursday night booth is the worst in sports history, followed closely by every other booth that featured Joe Theisman.

There were some really good match ups this year and some really crazy games. IIRC, the Eagles destroying the Giants was a Monday night game.

Philly destroyed the Redskins on a Monday night.

Am I actually thinking of a Sunday night game? Cincy having a chance to beat Pittsburgh late in their Monday night meeting was a pretty crazy game.

The Thursday crew is terrible, but I actually prefer them to Jaws and Gruden.

Absolutely.

I don't know that what you linked really justifies the move to cable though. I mean, it's doing great...for cable. But you could still make the argument that it would do better on network tv. I'm having trouble finding much in the way of ABC MNF ratings info other than record highs and record lows though.

Yeah, but the complaint was cable ratings would be terrible. Meanwhile, since that decision was made cable TV has blown networks out of the water in terms of performance, if not overall ratings. It was exactly the right time to make the move. Cable is a much more viable place for quality/profitable programming than its reputation was when they switched.

Gotcha. Yeah, I agree cable was the right move. Though I wonder if ABC ever wishes they still had it...Monday night is not a strong night for them.

Disney made a concerted effort to move away from ABC sports and toward ESPN sports. Don't they call their ABC college lineup something like ESPN College Football?

ESPN was already a cable must, but after MNF I think their leverage to demand more from providers increased.

Do you really think MNF was that much more valuable of a property than SNF by the time ESPN got it? That's the part I didn't understand about the controversy about moving it. You still have 1 primetime game on cable and 1 on a network just like it used to be. That's especially true since the NFL quickly made SNF the marquee attraction after the switch. It was a good change to switch it though because having the premier games be scheduled for Sunday night is IMO a better solution.

I think you are talking about two different things, the NFL's motives and Disney's motives. I think Disney wanted to keep MNF. Also, NBC wanted back in. So instead of trying to outbid NBC for both, they kept their favorite and moved it to their sports specialists and kept it a premier product.

I don't think ESPN's leverage increased though by getting MNF. In the process, they lost SNF. And now that flex scheduling is in play, the matchups for MNF are often even worse than the old SNF matchups used to be.

MNF is still the only game in town, so to speak, while SNF is just the last game of a long day of NFL football. MNF is the more unique product.

Not for the junk pictures, but for not cooperating with the league's investigation.

Sorry to drag this thread back up, but as I watched the Tuesday night Vikings/Eagles game, I could swear I heard Jared Allen say he was from "Culinary Academy" when they went through the line ups towards the beginning of the game. Anyone else hear that?

I'm absolutely positive he didn't say Idaho St. Just thought it was funny.

And do players from Ohio St. get royalty checks if they announce it as THE Ohio St.? Just curious.

Yeah I read an interview on ESPN the Magazine (I was really bored waiting for my haircut) talking about that the other day. He said he does it because it pisses of the people who went to Idaho State, who want free publicity from him or something. He's a strange dude.

And no, the people that say "THE Ohio State" (along with everyone else that went to Ohio State) are just giant douchebags.

I've always meant to post a rant about guys that say "THE" before the name of their school. There needs to be a moratorium on that.
