So . . . Freeney and Mathis against rookie QBs for a fourth of the schedule next year? Interesting . . .

While he could start, I wouldn't be surprised to see Gabbert sit next year and develop behind Leftwich. It'd be the best move.

Wrong crappy QB. Garrard. But I'm sure you're right about Gabbert not starting.

Haha, whoops. Garrard's better, but they are kind of interchangable.

what on earth leads you to believe that he can be "solid to very good"? what did he show?

this is like the science vs faith argument. if you think he can be good based on faith, i respect that, but there is certainly no scientific fact or empirical data whatsoever to support your belief.

you better send out a vatican priest to investigate this matter.

He did have a career pre-2010 keep in mind. He's got all the physical tools and my opinion of what he could be was formed before his one poor NFL season with terrible talent around him. It's overreacting to ignore an entire college career and draft workouts over that one season - unless you felt that way about Clausen beforehand and then I'd have to ask why you felt that way.

lots of guys are great in college and then can't tie their shoes in the NFL. clausen is one of those guys, he just isn't an NFL football player.

you keep mentioning a lack of talent around him and i keep telling you that a lack of talent around you is no excuse to be a part of that lack of talent.

Yeah I would probably wait till after a guys rookie year to determine if he is going to be a good player or not.

I didn't watch a lot of Carolina football last year, but I tend to reserve opinion when a QB has almost literally zero talent around him.

good quarterbacks can make at least a few plays with substandard NFL players.

It's harder for pocket passers to make plays with substandard talent than more mobile QBs. That can be a defense of Clausen and a reason to favor Newton. There's also room between what Clausen is now (not very good) and what he can become (solid to very good).

Giving up on a QB after one year when you invested a high pick just isn't a good idea.

the relevant point is it doesn't matter if the current QB is Jimmy Clausen, you, or me, the panthers are going to suck in 2011. So unless you are damn sure that newton is going to be a stud, why not select one of the more known quantities (or trade down) and get the "sure thing" QB next year, when you still have the #1 pick b/c you're [expletive] terrible? I'd be perfectly happy if Clausen were traded out of Carolina, but the fact that I like Clausen doesn't change that this was a stupid pick for the Panthers (again, unless they know that Newton is the QB of the future).

and i had no feelings whatever about clausen beforehand, i'm simply telling you that he showed nothing, nothing, last year that would lead me to believe that he will do anything in professional football.

obviously, the panthers feel similarly after getting a year of him up close and personal.

And where have I guaranteed he'll reach his potential? Lots of guys look great early and then never get any better too. Clausen has the physical tools to be a solid to very good NFL QB, whether he'll reach that ceiling or not is definitely in question and his first year didn't make me feel better about him. Just because a guy is terrible in his rookie year with no talent around him doesn't mean he has no talent, it means he had a bad rookie year.

oh, i'm not saying that they should have panicked and went with newton over a more talented player on the defensive side of the ball. i'm just saying that they will never be good as long as clausen is starting for them.

or they think newton is going to sell tickets, or they're not an organization that should be respected b/c they're [expletive] terrible at this.

how much carolina football did you watch (note: I watched very little, but I watched every snap of Clausen's cfb career and thought he was best served going somewhere that would give him a chance to develop for a few years behind a decent QB - he definitely needed to get bigger and stronger to handle the NFL).

The Panthers also thought Jake Delhomme was a starting QB for a number of years that he wasn't. They have a history of misevaluating QBs.

Making a concrete decision on a rookie after one year in which he had no talent around him is overreacting. You may end up being right, but you're still jumping the gun on your evaluation. One year shouldn't make or break any player who has displayed the tools to be successful.

I agree but that's b/c I don't think the panthers will be good any time in the next decade no matter who is QB.

The Pirates, Clippers, and Raiders are all better organizations than the Panthers. Can't wait til they draft Luck next year.

The Clippers are a better organization than the Panthers? In what single way?

if you'd told me a few months ago that christian ponder would go in the top half of the first round, i would have thought you were crazy.

actually even if you told me that now i'd think you were crazy.

come on, in this world of fantasy football and sunday ticket and drinking heavily on sundays at sports bars, everyone watches everyone nowadays. i saw plenty of clausen, although i wish i hadn't.

I find it hilarious that people are actually advocating "tank for next year" as a legitimate strategy.

Also, Christian Ponder at #12? Are there gonna be 8 QBs picked in the first round now?

Why? If your goal is to win a championship and tanking one year brings you closer to it (better draft pick), that is a legitimate strategy.
