He's a cheap lefty starter who's been decently productive in his career so far. Of course the Cubs are shopping him.

And then they will go out and sign a lesser guy to a bigger contract. They can't spend what they need to on a first baseman because they absolutely must have another freaking starting pitcher despite having nothing but starting pitching in the system.

I think Marshall would still make a solid 3/4 starter much easier than Gorzelanny can fill a set up role for the Cubs. I don't have an issue at all with dealing Gorzelanny away, assuming we get something usable for him. Either a setup guy(assuming we'd move Marshall to the rotation since we wouldn't have a lefty at that point) or prospects.

True, but you know that all we'll get is two mid-level prospects still in A ball.

I'm almost certain the Marshall to the rotation ship has sailed.

It's been too long since Marshall has pitched a significant amount of innings as a starter. He's never been able to get past the 150 inning hurdle and he hasn't thrown 100 since 2007. It's going to take at least a year of gradually increasing the workload. He's done well in the role he has and it's not entirely convincing he's better than 5 guys they can put in the rotation ahead of him. Why bother?

I'l admit that the jump in innings scares me some. But, not as much for him as it would for Cashner. To me, the best rotation we could hope for next year is Zambrano/Dempster/Marshall/Cashner/Archer.......Obviously, Archer would have to prove himself worthy of a rotation spot in ST. But, this is our best UPSIDE anyway, as far as potential combos for the rotation goes. However, I actually think if Cashner AND Marshall were both in the rotation, you'd need a 6th guy(Coleman or Silva) to take a start from each away once a month, to help limit their potential innings.

It also brings the question up of who in the hell is left for the pen? If we went this direction, you'd have Marmol, possibly a guy you got for Gorzelanny or at least a guy you just signed to be a set up guy. You MAY get Guzman back, which would be a HUGE asset, just not one you can count on. You'd need Russell to be your LOOGY, since we don't have any other options. Then, you probably need a couple of the guys who were rotated up and down all of last year to become more consistent. But, I figure a couple of Stevens/Mateo/Diamond//Berg/Shark will wind up pitching significant innings anyway, so hopefully one or two of them would work out decently. Then, you have Jay Jackson and Carpenter coming up, both of who I think can fit in near the back end of the pen very soon.

Not that this will happen obviously, but I think this would be our best case scenario for the pitching staff, given our financial restraints. That said, I don't EXPECT Marshall to be moved at this stage either. But, I've always thought he would be a better starter than Gorzelanny and if he were to be dealt, then maybe Marshall would get a shot......

Agreed. He's not particularly young anymore and was one of the best relievers in the game last year. The injury risk and drop in bullpen talent isn't worth it. This isn't Cashner.

You have forgotten Wells on that pitching staff and I think he would have to be a lock for the rotation. That would probably push Marshall back into the bullpen which is good because the bullpen needs at least a little stability down there.

As for Gorzelanny, if the Cubs don't see him in the future rotation plans because of his injuries and walk rate then I can see why they would be shopping him because they weren't a fan at all of his ability to relieve. They might be thinking they can just trade him for an actual reliever. I wouldn't like that deal but I wouldn't hate it either since Gorzelanny is still a pretty big question mark and could very well get squeezed out of the rotation soon even if he remains on the Cubs.

I am not necessarily opposed to this as long as they can use him to get a good return, I am still not sold on Gorz, he seems to have many days where his control is completely horrible. However just dumping him would be a completely foolish thing to do.

This makes no sense, especially if we're trying to be frugal.

I agree, I don't get it. Gorzelanny doesn't have any real trade value and some of the prospects look promising, but unproven. It might make sense if you put him in a package to get a 1B or better starting pitcher, but trading him alone doesn't make sense.

If Gorzelanny is not slated for the rotation, he would have to move to the 'pen. I seem to recall that Gorzelanny would much rather start. Perhaps this is a case of Hendry trying to find a better "fit" for a player that he knows he cannot guarantee a preferred role? I find it difficult to envision any scenario in which the cubs opt to trade him of their own volition.

That having been said, this trade would likely be one more in a growing list of bad moves/non-moves the cubs have made this offseason.

If it's done, the Cubs better end up with the best player involved in the trade by including others in a package with Gorzelanny. Some small market team should love to get Gorzelanny, Wells and Colvin to fill three starting spots and virtually no cost.

Are the Cubs still interested in Chris Davis from the Rangers, they have a need for catching and it would seem the Cubs offering arbitration lines up with the Cubs parting with one of their catching prospects?

Bruce Levine: Yes, Texas wants Robert Chirronos, a hard-hitting 27-year-old catcher. The Cubs and Texas are looking to expand the deal where it would be Chirrinos and a pitcher going to the Rangers for Davis and a pitcher, a reliever off the big-league staff. That deal is still being explored by both sides.

Texas needs a catcher? Did they trade Salty and Max Ramirez?

Salty went to the Red Sox at last year's deadline for minor leaguers. I think Ramirez is still there, but for some reason I'm thinking he'll need to be moved from catcher for defensive reasons. Am I wrong there?

Even if he doesn't, Chirinos or Castillo would provide depth for them.

Trying to think of a way that trading Gorzelanny isn't a piss poor use of his value.

Gorzelanny for Kila and Robinson Tejeda?
