I really believe Michigan is making a huge mistake. I don't see how they aren't mediocre for a while longer still unless they hire a huge name. I mean, my guess is they'll want to run a traditional offense again (I don't know for sure, I haven't followed too closely, it just seems like a lot of fans thought RichRod was gimmicky) which is going to mean a lot of turnover. You'd think that with the potential turnover of players it will be a year or two before they are at this years level again.

Brandon and the fans will probably have less patience with the new coach, as well. Especially with the late firing, it could take a few years before the new coach can really put together a staff he likes. Add in the effect this will have on the recruiting class next month and potential transfers and you've got a recipe for taking a step back.

Big name programs are going to be coming across this problem more and more. This isn't pre-1993 college football. Coaching changes, particularly frequent ones, can be very damaging to football programs and the big programs rarely have the necessary patience to let a coach build a program.

I think big time programs think they can just grab a coach and people will flock to their school because of there name (the schools name) thus they think they can fire a coach when ever they need to. The problem is when every school is on all the time recruits can watch everyone play so it's not like all the exposure is to big time schools like it used to be.

With national TV exposure and limits on scholarships, schools like Michigan just can't maintain the recruiting advantage that they once enjoyed, particularly when it comes to depth. It's very, very hard to avoid taking a step or two back when making this kind of change.

Brandon said that Michigan had been in the middle of the pack in regards to coaches' salaries, but that's going to change. It seems like this is the new arms race. Rather than just pouring everything into facilities to attract recruits, athletic departments are going to start throwing much more money at head coaches and assistant coaches in order to keep pace.

I know for a lot of Tennessee fans, they expect the program to consistently be what it was in the '90s and don't realize (or accept) that the entirety of the NCAA has gotten far more competitive in just the past decade. Extreme dominance and quick fixes are not the norm, even for elite programs, at this point. The dominance Florida has enjoyed (w/the Tebow/Meyer duo) and the quick turnaround at Bama under Saban has convinced Tennessee fans that we can do that too, but those two schools are the extreme exception because of the coaches they found and the recruiting base they have.

It used to work like that all the time that a name school and a name coach could fix a program quickly, but that's simply not the case anymore. That misperception has led to numerous poor firings, including this one.

starting a nationwide coaching search on January 5th, this was precisely the worst-case scenario

I really doubt Brandon is just starting the search. I'm sure he's been quietly putting out feelers since the season ended. That said, if we don't have a new coach within a week I'm going to flip out. Our recruiting class is already going to be [expletive]. It's going to get worse with each passing day.

The position needs to be filled by Friday at the latest. With the UA game tonight and the Army All American on Saturday every minute counts now. As mentioned he has to alreday have a short list Harbaugh and Miles. If you can't get anything substantial from them just give it to Hoke now.

This Brady Hoke talk is troubling. If he wasn't a "Michigan Man" he wouldn't even be in the conversation. He has a losing record as a head coach, has had 2 seasons that would even qualify as being "good", and wasn't even considered by Indiana and Minnesota when they chose new coaches. No offense to those programs, but they aren't Michigan. [expletive] Brady Hoke. He better not be the next head coach.

you know who wasn't a Michigan Man? Bo Schembechler

Exactly. [expletive] every stupid Michigan fan who keeps spouting off about the next coach needing to be a Michigan Man. It's the reason why the fan base was divided the moment Rich Rod stepped on campus 3 years ago.

I would normally hope that Michigan would take Miles off our hands, but not this late in the game. While I'd welcome a new coach at LSU, I'd rather not have to look for one this late in the recruiting game.

I'm sure Pelini would be happy to return to LSU.

Are most of these Michigan Man blowhards townies, or is the alumni caught up in this obsession as well?

Same problem with running a spread offense. It's not "Michigan football."

Too bad Rodriguez couldn't just do what Lovie Smith does and tell the reporters over and over again that Bears football means running the ball but then just do what's actually best for the team. Saying that beating the Packers was goal #1 right when he was hired helped, too. But Rodriguez wasn't in a position to just BS his way to placating the local media and fan base.

Seriously throw Gary Patterson $5+ million and make him turn you down. Has his name even once been mentioned. I know its thought to be tought to pull him away from Ft. Worth, but at least try.

Michigan is definitely going to throw some money at the new coach. David Brandon said as much today in the press conference. I think a homerun hire is the only way to bring the divided fan base back together. We'll see. Let's hope it doesn't take long.

From reading various UM boards over the years, I have to say some of the wealthy alumni are caught up with the obsession as well, especially all the blue hairs who still attend every football game.

Gary Moeller is available and is a Michigan Man

He's also 70.

So the only reason you are discounting him is his age?

Not too often you see 70 year olds get back into football after 8 years of retirement.
