Good to see other teams than the Red Sox and Yankees signing big names if this is true.

Werth Close To Deal With Nationals

By Zach Links [December 5 at 3:32pm CST]

Free agent outfielder Jayson Werth is close to a deal with the Washington Nationals, a source tells MLB.com's Todd Zolecki. Werth signing with the Nats would be a surprise, though the pairing does make sense. Washington now has money to spend after losing Adam Dunn in free agency and needs to replace the bopper's bat in the lineup.

It was said earlier this week that the most serious suitors for Werth were the Phillies, Tigers, and Red Sox. Boston met with Werth on Wednesday though contract terms were not discussed.

Ken Rosenthal:

Werth 7-yr deal with #Nationals great news for Crawford. Werth is 31. Crawford is 29. Eight yrs for Carl would seem very possible now. #MLB

Well they're not going to regret that in the future at all. I like how Washington is stepping up their game, but that's a bit crazy.

One would think however that this deal would put the kibosh on Carlos Pena to the Nats?

This is what happens when you are horrible for so long. You see it a lot with teams like the Royals, Nationals, Pirates...you will always have to way overpay for somebody just to get them to play there.

Wow. This has been a stellar day for baseball. What an amazingly stupid contract decision for the Nationals. Absurdly stupid.

Yep. I think you could even put us and the Soriano deal into this category as well. But, the bad thing here is this WILL affect the rest of this market, in all likelihood.

It's amusing how many Cubs fans cling to this idea that Hendry is some kind of exceptionally bad GM instead of just being a typically bad one. So many dreams are going to be crushed after he's finally gone.

The Cubs can find a taker for Soriano the moment they're willing to pay 75%+ of his remaining salary and take garbage in return. Don't be silly and think anything else is realist-....oh, it's BtB. Nevermind.

As long as there is a 3rd team involved it should be pretty easy

Excellent.

Apparently the Nationals offer was so far and beyond what anyone else was offering, Boras didn't even ask other suitors to match before they accepted it.

That is called the Hendry technique.

LOL! You would think other GMs would learn from Hendry's mistakes. And here I thought giving longterm contracts to 30+ year olds was over.

More like McDonough's mistakes. The story goes, Hendry wanted to offer 6 years, but McDonough told him to offer 8 years to seal the deal because he really wanted the Cubs to get a big name to help with the sale of the team.
