So where's Pena going to sign now? All of our 1B options keep going to other teams so I'm assuming Pena will also.

Not just other teams. Our two arch rivals. So far, the Cubs have lost out on Dunn, Berkman and Gonzalez. But losing that third baseman has hurt the most. Enjoy the view from the upper, upper deck, Ronnie.

The Nationals.

I'm assuming the Cubs go youngish and cheap at 1B, older and recovering from surgery on the mound and hope the prospects come through. In 2012.

Next season is going to suck, isn't it?

Probably.

It could be fun if players like Castro, Cashner, Colvin, B Jax, Vitters, Archer, McNutt and Carpenter continue to develop.

That would be nice if I wanted to watch AAA baseball. However I want to watch a team compete for a World Series. Unfortunately the cubs won't reciprocate.

Yep. You're likely not going to watch the Cubs compete for a World Series championship next year. But if most of those guys take steps forward in their development it improves the chances of it happening in the near future.

The moves--or lack thereof--by the front office thus far (re-signing Quade, passing on Dunn, et al., offering arbitration to Hill) seem to suggest their confidence in the current roster's ability to match the 24-13 record they produced under Quade at the end of the season.

$8 million for a guy who can't hit lefties and who's going to be bad in LF? no thank you. though the cards can probably mitigate his bad defense more than most teams since they have a ground ball-heavy staff and rasmus has good range.

He's going to be bad in RF, not LF (unless something tragic happens to Matt Holliday).

They're moving Holliday to Right.

While I didn't have my heart set on Berkman as the 1-2 year solution at 1B; I really feel like I'm watching the NFL Draft. Or at least a fantasy football draft. You know... when people are waiting to draft a kicker or a defense (Fantasy) or a DB (NFL), and then the first one gets drafted and starts a run on that certain position. By the time it's your pick, you're stuck with taking the "best available on the board", whether the player is good or not, you're just trying to fill a hole.

That is how I feel with the Cubs. Dunn was the first chip to fall. Then Gonzalez gets traded to Boston (close) and Berkman signs with St. Louis. At this point, I fully expect the Nats to get Pena. We'll either make the stupid trade for Chris Davis, or we'll do nothing and stick Colvin at first and Fukudome in RF full time.

I really, really, really don't like the way this offseason is looking right now.

While I won't hold my breath, I hold a shred of hope that we can sign Pena as the stop-gap. In and of itself that is sad, considering on how Pena was great a year or two ago.

Meh.

are we even considering competing?

thank god for guys like raisin and O_O, because their work in the minor league forum is about all we have to look forward to

That outfield is going to be about as bad as it gets defensively. Hopefully Berkman will continue to be as injured as he's been the last few years.

Not even close. Holliday has been a + LF his entire career, Rasmus has the athleticism to be a ++ CF. Berkman will undoubtedly be bad in LF, but there will be plenty of worse outfield defenses.

It's Theriot and Schumaker up the middle that scares the [expletive] out of me.

I do not think this is a good move at all for the Cardinals, I understand giving up defense for a definitive offensive production but Berkman is not necessarily going to give you the offensive production needed to offset horrendous defense. As a Cubs fan I love what the Cardinals have done with their infield =D> .

which is a scary thought.

I don't think it is as scary thought as people make it seem. The Cubs aren't as far away as their record indicates. I personally feel if the Cubs went into the 2011 season with Lee at first and Lilly in the rotation the Cubs would still be a good bet to finish in the low to mid 80s wins. Add one key reliever could get them a little higher. There were a lot of guys playing under their heads last year for us and not a lot playing over.

No one's even mentioned this here, but the Cubs also offered Berkman 8 mill for one year, according to Levine. But, we wanted to defer some of the money. Not exactly a ringing endorsement for Ricketts financial position at the moment.

I think you're dead on, and it scares the beejeezus out of me.
