No one's even mentioned this here, but the Cubs also offered Berkman 8 mill for one year, according to Levine. But, we wanted to defer some of the money. Not exactly a ringing endorsement for Ricketts financial position at the moment.

For $8 million which team would you rather play for? That is the reality of the situation.

The Cubs are doing a fantastic job of driving fans away from the team. It is early yet, but so far the Ricketts clan seem to make PR blunder after PR blunder.

My point isn't that Berkman chose the Cards though. It's that our offer was deferred money. Seriously, we've never done that type of thing before Ricketts took over(Dempster did it last year for us too). He must really not have any cash available to make this team better. If this is the case, why did he even buy the team?

Yeah, I'm glad we missed out on him. It's just hearing that we offered him deferred money is what got me. If I was him, I'd rather play for the Cards too.

Not signing Lance Berkman is a PR blunder? What kind of [expletive] nonsense is that?

I didn't say not signing Berkman was a PR blunder. But deferring money on a one year contract to a free agent is comical. This organization is struggling to do anything right since the end of the season whether it is player acquisition or the business side of the organization.

Man, it's sad that such a well respected franchise is being so embarrassed.

But didn't you have hope that the Ricketts family would have a better plan than they have demonstrated so far? Tom seems like he is in way over his head and why on earth would any new ownership group keep the same Pres and GM that have not produced a consistent winner?

Because they have such little money at their disposal.

There has to be money somewhere. Were one of the biggest market teams in baseball with the highest ticket prices, and they almost always sell out. Granted, Hendry handed out some awful contracts, but the organization cant be flat broke. They just need to stop glorifying Wrigley Field and whore it out a bit more. As far as Im concerned it can be called McDonalds-Starbucks-Coca Cola-Wal-Mart Field if it will bring in enough money to field a good team.

Isn't it possible that the Cubs thought they were offering the most $$$, albeit with a chunk of it deferred?

Would it make you feel better if they offered $5M with none deferred versus $8M with $3M deferred?

Knowing what we do now about the Cards' offer, the outcome would've been the same either way, but nonetheless it's a valid question.
