It occurs to me that the only reports I've seen linking the Cubs to Davis are one beat writer speculating we might have interest and one blog rumor.

Is there anything more concrete out there?

Well, it is only Chris Davis, I don't expect someone like Rosenthal to have his ears to the ground about every Chris Davis rumbling.

Neither do I. But I would hope a beat writer in Chicago or Arlington might have something more than a blind guess that the two gms maybe talked about one player... maybe.

Rangers, Cubs Talking Multiplayer Trade

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [December 7 at 6:00pm CST]

The Rangers and Cubs are discussing a trade that would send Chris Davis and Darren O'Day to Chicago, according to Ed Price of AOLFanHouse (on Twitter).

Ed Price was the man last year, right? I am thinking this thing has legs.

O'day would be an awesome bullpen pick up but are you sensing this could be an expensive pickup?

Perhaps the Cubs believe either Chirinos or Castillo is worth more right now than Davis and wanted to expand the deal to make it more fair?

Honestly, I really doubt it. However, I get the feeling we won't have to wait to much longer to find out.

They'll probably get Soto back in return or something.

Well yea there is really no need for Soto since we have Koyie Hill. I mean the Cubs are like 144-1 when Koyie Hill starts.

can anyone else see us picking up o'day ans davis and calling it an off season?

Honestly, no. Some dude on MLBtr thinks we are signing Pena to some multi-year deal tonight on top of this trade, which sucks. However, even if Pena doesn't go through we are going to do something else.

heh, i can see hendry sitting with three offers out: LaRoche, Davis and Pena. And then in a matter of minutes, all three sign the dotted line and hendry gets stuck with all three. of course it doesnt work that way, but i can see it in my mind. i dreamed it in my head.

Awesome news! I just read on a Rangers board that Chris Davis didn't have good things to say about Rudy prior to his departure from Texas.

I love it!

Not according to Davis.

"Rudy and I got along great," Davis said. "I almost feel bad for what I put him through the first half. We were trying every day to figure something out and it was never a lack of effort on his part or my part. It would have taken a small miracle for me to find it at that point because I was so lost. The information he was giving me was the right information. I just wasn't able to take it and run with it."

Forget crash Davis, if we can get Darren O'Day i'd be elated. Dude has really turned into a good reliever. He was money for Texas in the playoffs. Plus maybe we can start up the Darren O'Day chant....Ohhh'day o'day o'day o'day ohhhday ohhhday.

My opinion:

- Robinson Chirinos needs another year in the minors before becoming a major league backup catcher. He doesn't seem to profile as a starting catcher (but his power numbers would most likely play up in Texas). That being said, if a team out there thinks he can be a starter, I say sell high. We wouldn't be able to use him until next year, and even then, he would only see real playing time if Soto got hurt.

- Rafael Dolis is taking up a spot on the 40-man roster when he is definitely at least a full year away from being a major league reliever (my guess is that he needs at least two more years). Even though he has a 100 mph fastball, he just hasn't amassed the dominating strikeout totals in order to be considered a prize prospect. If someone else thinks he is a top prospect, I say sell high.

- Chris Davis is a left-handed corner infielder who was drafted in the 5th round of 2006. Although he has shown flashes of power, he seems to have stalled out a bit at the major league level. Since he is only 25 and has worked with Rudy Jaramillo in the past, I will gladly trust that Rudy has given a strong recommendation on his talent and defer to his better judgment. His statistics remind me of what Micah Hoffpauir has done recently, but he is several years younger. Since he is cost-controlled for a few more years, I think it's worth taking a chance on him. I truly see him fitting in as the backup 1B and 3B this year, with the Cubs still trying to sign Carlos Pena to start.

- Darren O'Day is a 28 year old right-handed side-armer who has posted back-to-back solid seasons. Although making a name for himself later in his career, has does have several things going for him. First of all, he doesn't walk people (which seems tough to do as a side-armer to me). Second, he doesn't give up home runs. And finally, his WHIPs the past two years have been 0.95 and 0.89 respectively. Definitely someone who could find a home in our bullpen. He seems a bit like a ROOGY (although he has been effective against LHers as well), and someone who you might use to get out of jams in an inning.

Overall, even if Chirinos and Dolis turn out to be quality starters in the majors, I feel like this trade has the potential to work out for the Cubs. I think we are a better team with Davis and O'Day than we are with Chirinos and Dolis. If 2011 takes a downturn, O'Day could be traded to a contender at the deadline for a couple prospects.

The Cubs like Davis, but don't want to part with much in a trade, according to Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram (Twitter link).

Is a guy like Chirinos or Dolis that much?? I am not a huge fan of Davis, but don't mind the idea of getting him if all it takes is a Chirinos or Dolis type, 2nd tier prospect.

That's where O'Day comes in, I think. Chirinos is probably what the Cubs want to give up. Rangers probably want more. Offering Dolis and getting the bullpen help in addition seems to make sense for both teams.
