Bruce,

Any info on the new Chris Davis and Darren O'Day to the Cubs rumor? Which catcher would be going?

No info

A Cubs person seemed surprised to hear this as did somebody close to the Rangers.

Wonder if this means anything, or if the Cubs/Rangers guys just didn't want to give anything away?

I'm really liking this deal, so hopefully it's just team personnel posturing.

Do the cubs intend to keep 4 catchers on the 40 man roster? If not his deal, there must be something in the works, no?

Found this on Twitter from Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News:

Hearing Rangers and Cubs talking about Chris Davis. Darren O'Day may also interest Cubs. Rangers reportedly like C Robinson Chirinos.

Got to be too much smoke for there not to be something there. It may not be imminent, but I've got to believe they're working on this or something similar.

From Bruce Levine's post on Matt Garza

The Cubs have also continued to kick the tires on a trade with the Texas Rangers for first baseman/third baseman Chris Davis. Even with the signing of Pena, Davis could be a valuable player coming off the bench for the Cubs next season. Texas is interested in 27-year-old catcher Robinson Chirinos, who played at Double-A last season.

Also said to be in the mix in a Davis deal is right-handed pitcher Darren O'Day, a relief specialist who was 6-2 with a 2.03 ERA in 72 games with the Rangers in 2010.

If the Cubs get O'Day, I hope the Oday, Oday, Oday chant follows him to Wrigley.

One of the most awesome things I've witnessed in sports the past couple of years was Ranger fans chanting that during game 3 of the World Series.

Can't understand why the Rangers would give up O'Day. He's been as solid a BP arm as they've had and he's popular in the clubhouse. I can see giving Chris Davis a fresh start, but shipping out O'Day doesn't make a ton of sense.

Maybe they realize the year to year volitility of middle relievers and are trying to maximize his value.

He's arbitration eligible and Texas isn't exactly flush with cash.

They're not getting a ton of value, though. A 27-year-old catcher who was in AA last year and a nice relief pitcher prospect isn't an exciting haul. Since he's still pretty cheap, I'd rather keep O'Day and see if he can continue to pitch well.

But isn't he up for arbitration this year, meaning he's not going to be that cheap?

Yes, but he won't get that much. Certainly no more than $1.5.

But it's the last offseason they have to trade him while he's currently not getting lots of money. One off year (which as a reliever could easily happen) and his salary will continue to rise while his value drops.

I wasn't so much saying they shouldn't trade him, just that the rumored deal from the Cubs doesn't seem to be selling high.

The Rangers are expected to have a payroll in the 85-90 million category next year. The new ownership group, because of who's in it and because of their new TV deal with FoxSports, will have a significantly larger pool of money to play with.
