The Cubs need superstar level production(5+ WAR type stuff). They have a good amount of "good" players and several of their top prospects appear decent bets to be good but not awesome players, but they need more at the top if they're going to be sustainably good. Gonzalez would've been that type of guy, but he's also got a heavy monetary and player cost. Given the financial limitations they have at this time, their best bet is probably to scout well and hit it big on an undervalued trade target.

Don't forget the two relievers! Two relievers to go along with our pretty good catcher and shortstop. A dynasty in the making.

Both Soto and Castro are two of the best young players at their position. Soto's .385 wOBA was the best in the majors among catchers with at least 200 PAs.

I agree entirely. I was more making fun that you thought we were also building around Marshall and Marmol.

I didn't mean we'd be building around them, more that they'd still be positive assets to the team at that point.

1.) I have seen no signs that Cashner moves back to starting.

They've said they are still considering it, but I don't know that they will. Even it they don't, they're not getting max value from him but he could be a dominant reliever by then - which is still a plus.

2.) Your forgot McNutt

That I did, my bad. I figured I'd forget a guy or two.

Soto will be 28 on opening day next year and is a catcher. He's not particularly young, and we're currently wasting his best years.

Correct, but hopefully he'll still be an above average to good offensive catcher in his pre-30s years. He'll be past his best years, but should still be better than most catchers at that point.

god im so envious of the red sox organization

even in a "down year" they win 89 games in a stacked division. then they follow it up by getting an elite player in the offseason

meanwhile we can't even afford adam dunn

Not to mention, they're probably still going to get one of Werth or Crawford as well.

So now this trade may not happen according to mlbtraderumors

Rotoworld says...

The Red Sox could wait until spring to announce an extension for Adrian Gonzalez.

The reasoning for this would be two-fold: 1) They could get a look at Gonzalez, who is coming off shoulder surgery, in spring training before committing a huge contract to him. 2) Delaying the announcement into the season would have luxury tax implications. This is something they did with the Josh Beckett extension. SI.com's Jon Heyman has reported that the Sox could go ahead and approve the trade even if they haven't reached an extension prior to the Sunday afternoon deadline.

I personally don't see why the Red Sox have a negotiating window in order to make this deal work. The guy is still signed to one more year on his current contract. Whether or not he signs an extension should have no effect on whether or not he can be traded to the team. Unless the reason they're holding off is because if they find out they won't be able to sign him they want to adjust the players sent over in the deal? Otherwise, I don't understand why they are telling themselves they only have a small negotiating window... wouldn't this window technically be able to last between now and the end of next season before he becomes a free agent?

FWIW

Buster Olney of ESPN.com reports that the Red Sox likely won't go through with the Adrian Gonzalez trade unless they have an "understanding a contract can get done."

The deadline for contract extension negotiations is 2 p.m. ET on Sunday, so we'll know soon whether the two sides were able to come to an agreement. Some other media reports have said that Boston will go through with the trade regardless of the negotiation's outcome. Stay turned.

It's cute they're pretending this might not happen.

What's sad is that some Cubs fans would even get excited if it didn't happen. Like we might actually have a shot. Ha!

Yea.. I am pretty sure if the Red Sox are balking at an extension price for Agon the Cubs would not be able to reach what he wants.

Reportedly the Cubs would never get the chance. SD says they won't field other offers if this falls through with Boston.

No way. I think they'll listen when the Yankees offer a package with Jesus Montero.

Yeah, that's BS.

They will probably be looking for more and no contract negotiations, but saying that they're not fielding offers is just blustering.

Per Rotoworld:

SI.com's Jon Heyman is reporting that the Red Sox and Adrian Gonzalez could not agree to a contract extension and the deal has fallen through.

Boston reportedly couldn't come to an agreement with Gonzalez on a contract extension by Sunday afternoon's deadline. Earlier reports said the Red Sox might go through with the trade regardless, but Heyman believes the trade has fallen through. Boston and San Diego agreed to a trade on Thursday that sent Gonzalez to the Red Sox and prospects Casey Kelly, Anthony Rizzo, Reymond Fuentes and a PTBNL to the Padres. The Padres said Thursday that they wouldn't field more offers for Gonzalez if this trade fell through.

Agonz is reportedly looking for a 8 year 160 million contract. Yea no [expletive] thanks.

He's obviously not going to get that much, but yeah, pass.

Why? That takes him to age 36. He is a premier offensive and defensive player. Passing on contracts like this every time means you never get them, because someone will pay it.
