"I like this move. The Riot isn't great, but if you're going to put scrappers on the team, he's on the upper end of that spectrum."

This is a quote offer of the GatewayRedbirds board. This may be the funniest yet!

While I am happy to hear this... he sadly is an upgrade to their current short stop situation, so any upgrade for the cardinals does not thrill me. Lets hope McGwire tries to make Theriot pull the bull therefore he can show off his warning track power and his lack of plate patience.

I'm quite sure he's not an upgrade over Ryan if you're factoring in defense

I understand the Cardinals had him before, but they released him meaning they didn't want him anymore. So Miles signed with the Cubs has a historically pathetic season and somehow the Cardinals want him back.

Miles was a FA when Cubs signed him, Cardinals didn't released him. Cubs traded him to A's, then A's traded him to Reds, then got released by the Reds, and finally Cardinals picked him up... Then he goes .281/.311/.317 in 139 ABs which was about 20 times better than what he did with the Cubs and about on par with the Cardinals earlier in his career.

I love how they learned nothing from Eckstein. This really brightened my day.

Umm, are you referring to the David Eckstein who was the MVP for the 2006 World Champion Cardinals?

DeRosa: Cubs --> Indians --> Cardinals

Miles: Cubs -->A's/Reds --> Cardinals

Theriot: Cubs --> Dodgers --> Cardinals

lol, I don't think I really comprehend this. First DeRosa, then Miles and now Theriot. Do the Cardinals secretly covet our gritty white MI's? But they can't trade for them because we're rivals so they wait until we trade them to someone else and then make their move?

They love gritty little white players far too much down here.

At least Eckstein had a 100 OPS+ over a full season... so he was "Just Enough"... like his nickname. On the other hand, Theriot isn't enough. You gotta factor in his crappy D and don't get me started on his basestealing and baserunning... Anyway, Cardinals been going worse at SS since Eckstein left which is fine with me, but they still have Pujols...

Theriot is an upgrade, if by upgrade you meant downgrade.

Theriot: "I'm finally on the right side of the Cubs-Cardinals rivalry."

Theriot came along with Ted Lilly from the Cubs for second baseman Blake DeWitt at the trading deadline, and continued an unimpressive season. In 54 games for the Dodgers, he hit an empty .242, with one homer, a .323 on-base percentage and a lowly .283 slugging percentage.

He had a little speed, was probably better defensively than anticipated and was good in the clubhouse, but he hurt the lineup and just wasn’t going to help the Dodgers win.

It made for a brief, unmemorable Dodger career. But right now, brief sounds good.

You're surprised that Theriot would be a shameless suck up?

Miles was a FA when the Cubs signed him because the Cardinals had non-tendered him. There's not much difference between that and releasing him.

Haven't Cubs been winning that rivalry in the past few years (during the season anyway)??? Just curious...

DeRosa from what I remember was always complimentary of the Cubs when he was on the Cardinals and didn't seem to get involved in trash talking and the rivalry. Theriot is just a douche. He must have read NSBB too much and didn't like our opinions of him.

We've already got those douches in spades. I already know Theriot's going to be the most popular Cardinal next year. Every conversation about Theriot will start with a rational person talking about how shitty his OBP is and how he shouldn't be getting 500 plate appearances. Then someone stupid will pipe in with "yeah, but he just plays hard. I'd rather have him than Matt Holliday."

The best Aaron Miles factoid was how when the A's traded for him they released him within a few weeks, as if they traded just for the moment to cut him out of spite for his sins against baseball

2010

Brendan Ryan WAR: 1.0

Ryan Theriot WAR: 0.0

Theriot is better offensively, but UZR loves Ryan as a defensive SS. So Theriot is a slight downgrade for them according to WAR.

It was more, "if we take on their awful contract, we won't have to give up anything for Jake Fox, who might bring a bit of power to this very punchless offense."

Of course, Jake Fox didn't work out. But despite what the media portrayed, Aaron Miles was not the A's real target.
