I don't see many Cub/Packer fans showing up to Wrigley with a Packer jersey on and a Cub hat.

They may say "I don't care" but on some level there's an understanding that it's strange, and a hiding of one's loyalties in certain situations that goes along with that.

How often do you see Bears jerseys at Cubs games?

Fairly often. Certainly every time I am at Wrigley I note at least a couple Bears jersey/hats. Depending on how they're doing -- or expected to do -- at the time.

I expect there will be plenty on display this year.

It doesn't matter much to me. The only times I really think about the fact that the Bulls and Cubs are in the same city are when a Cubs player attends a Bulls game or a Bulls person sings the 7th inning stretch. It's different leagues, different times of year, and I barely even notice. It's not difficult to separate the team from the city in your mind when you don't actually go to the city all that much.

In short, as long as someone came to that rival team legitimately and not just because they were good when that person was a kid, it shouldn't really matter.

lol...I love that there's a "legitimate" way to have scattered loyalties.

Legitimate: I grew up in Iowa/Nebraska/Kansas, and there's no pro team there, so my fandom is fairly spread out.

Not legitimate: I was a huge Charles Barkley fan growing up, so I'm a Rockets fan.

Andy, we're not talking about your fandom.

I know we're not. I just don't see why it's a big deal. You're talking about sports fan decisions that are generally made by kids under the age of 10. They don't think in terms of "I can't root for the Packers, they're rivals to the Bears, and these other teams I picked are in Chicago!!!!".

I'd say something like 90% of Packers fans in Illinois are a fan of one of the Chicago baseball teams and probably a fan of another Chicago team as well. It's not all that rare. In fact, I think every Packer fan on here that is also a Cubs fan roots for the same teams that I do.

I grew up not too far away from Rockford, which is pretty split between Bears and Packers fans. The first sports team I ever liked was the Bulls. As UMFan guessed, I grew up liking the Packers because of Favre. I didn't have a real dislike for the Bears until around 2005 when all my friends who were Packer fans growing up decided to jump ship for the Bears. And yes, that really happened. Almost all of my friends in grade school were Packers fans before they became Bears fans. Bandwagon, much?

I became a Cubs fan in 98 and shortly after that, I became a Hawks fan. Nothing too special about that. I should probably just put in my sig that I'm a Packers-Cubs-Bulls-Blackhawks fan. Just like how SSR is a Sox fan.

It's odd.

I guess whatever you were an impressionable 9 year old that liked the man wearing green hopped up on painkillers dancing around the field every time he completed a pass. Fine. But once you grew up and saw what that green team stands for (Wisconsin, cheese, hicks, spousal abuse), why wouldn't you come to your senses? I would even be ok if you were impressioned by the vikings at an early age, but the Packers? People from Wisconsin hate Chicagoans and everything we stand for a vice versa. I'm sure true Wisconsin people don't truely respect the Bulls/Cubs/Hawks/Packers fan, as well as the Chicagoans. So you in this weird no man's land. Obviously you are not going to change now, and whatever, I'm not saying you aren't allowed to. I just don't understand the thought process that says that it's ok to like anything Wisconsin but their beer.

It would be like saying "I really hate Hitler and everything he stood for. Well, except I think he had a point with that whole final solution thing."*

*sorry..if that offends anyone, I will remove it.

You just compared sports fandom and the Green Bay Packers to the holocaust.

I think you're overreacting a touch.

Remove Wisconsin/cheese/beer, add Michigan/cars/motown.

Why are you a Michigan fan?

Well, hating a team because of something an outside person does is pretty weird to me.

Deciding to like a team because of one player is also very strange.

To be honest I don't get Rockford being split, either. That city is well within the Illinois border, and Chicago is much, much closer than Green Bay. Those people have no more claim to being Packers than someone living in Philly would have rooting for NY.

And Wisconsin doesn't care if Rockford people root for the Pack. They hate Rockford. It's Illinois. You're all FIBs to them.

Soul is right. You can be a Packer fan but you're still a FIB in their eyes.

It wasn't just an outside person. It was quite a number of people. And the [expletive] that I got that year for going 4-12 while the Bears won the division was ridiculous. I was getting [expletive] from people that were so called Packer fans the year before. What the hell is that [expletive] about? I've always been a gracious winner and never been the type to rub it in. I've done absolutely no gloating whatsoever this week but if the Bears won that game, I'd never be able to live it down. I guess that's my fault, but the point remains.

I'm not going to stop liking the Packers just because "Wisconsin hates people from Illinois." Not really quite sure how you feel towards a particular team, but I've had emotional and vested interest in the Packers since I was 5. I'm not going to, all of a sudden, feel differently towards a team and just become a Bears fan.

What does FIB mean

[expletive] Illinois Bastards

There's also the slightly more obscure FISHTAB.

[expletive] Illinois [expletive] head towing a boat.

I've been a Cubs fan my whole life because it was the one thing I could always have in common with my father and both grandfathers.

I became a Bulls "fan" when they drafted BJ Armstrong. I didn't care about the NBA before that, and I stopped caring when they let him go. I sometimes watch some playoff games, but that's about it these days.

I have no idea why or how I became a Falcons fan considering they always sucked when I was young and never on TV. My dad is a big Bears fan, and my mother likes the Vikings so I was taught at a very early age to hate the Packers.

Cool

What other nuggets of parochial Illinois/Wisconsin information should I know

Mainly that Wisconsin-ites hate people from Illinois, but are more than willing to utilize selective amnesia when people from Illinois open their wallets.

How are Rose's MVP chances looking?

One thing I noticed is that the last MVP to be on a team with less than 50 wins was Iverson in 2000-01. The Knicks are going to be under 50 -- does Rose end up getting the edge as a result?
