So we're having a news conference running at the same time as NLCS Game 3? Very curious.

I'm happy with Quade.

First pitch is 4:19 right? They could be done before, but that does sort of fly in the face of the the don't mess with the playoff games unspoken rule. Maybe they thought keeping your own guy wasn't a big deal. Seattle did announce their hiring of a new guy on the same day as game 3 of the ALCS.

The rule is you can't make any announcements during the World Series.

I thought it was only the WS they cared about with that rule. Anyways who cares about the people of Philly or San Fransisco.

He got good results out of the young players after the season was lost, and they actually looked like they were playing again instead of just going through the motions like they were under Lou. I'm willing to give this a chance and see how it works out.

See I don't know how much creedence we should give what happened in September. I certainly don't think it should hurt his evaluation, but I'm not sure how much it helped.

In that "amazing" September run the Cubs had here are their team hitting numbers with NL ranking in ():

BA:.232 (13th)

OBP:.305 (12th)

SLG: .343 (15th)

OPS: .648 (14th)

OPS+: 84 (14th)

Runs: 108 (14th)

Now here are their numbers for all of 2010 (including September:

BA:.257 (7th)

OBP:.320 (11th)

SLG: .401 (9th)

OPS: .721 (10th)

OPS+: 98 (10th)

Runs: 108 (10th)

So they hit miserably, won a bunch of close games and had above normal pitching. I'm not saying I disagree with Quade as the manager. I'm saying that for me it's not because he got our hitters to play particularly well, because they didn't....they played worse.

I love twitter:

BREAKING: Cubs honor Ryne Sandberg by not making him manage them.

BTW, if you want to single out dumb Cubs fans, do a twitter search for "Sandberg" right now.

I'm down with this.

Here's to hoping he'll use his knowledge of the players in the minors to decide who is a player and who is not. Given the Cubs verbal commitment to developing the farm, he's probably one of the best guys for the job.

It's actually at 3:19 CST and the press conference is at 3:00 CST...but they still could be done before.

Yeah, I was doing the time zone translation in my own head.

So Quade is the first interim Cubs manager since Gene Michael ('86-'87) to earn the job outright for the following year.

That worked out swell.

Whether Sandberg is ever our manager or not, this was the best possible scenario for him, in all likelihood. I seriously doubt we're going to set the world on fire over these next 2 seasons, so instead of the fans turning against Sandberg, we'll see them turn against Quade instead. And in 2(or possibly 3) seasons, when most of the bad contracts we have are off the books, we've got some cheap, young, productive talent playing in the majors, and have plenty of money to throw around to free agents again, we'll have a new manager again as well. Whether it's Sandberg or Girardi, they'll most likely be inheriting a much more attractive situation then, than what they would be now.

Mike Quade(who i'm glad got it over those 2 anyway)=stopgap

If anyone is wondering, Ryno is saying all the right things, but gives the impression that he's gonna be moving on from the org. He is disapointed, but he said he wishes Quade the best, wishes Hendry the best, Ricketts the best. Said what he's been doing the last 4 years was worth it. Everything he's saying is in past tense.

He was just asked if hes coming back to the Cubs organization, he said he was told by the Cubs that "he was not their guy", and he's heard no talk about any other positions or whatever. He's going to digest this news, and see what opportunities are out there to help him reach his goal of doing this in the major leagues. My impression is that he's not going to be in the Cubs org anymore, and it seems like its mutual.

He said he will NOT be a bench coach for the Cubs. Not sure if that was his decsion or the Quade's. But if I'm Quade, I'm not making Sandberg my bench coach.

He bacame the primary "baseball man" in the Yankees front office, right?

I think the Cubs org should get kudos for not caving in to popular demand and hiring Sandberg. If he wasn't their guy, he wasn't their guy. I also like that finally after a decade of big named managers coming in with a parade of media attention and expectations, the Cubs have hired a quieter manager.

It was probably intentional as the Cubs didn't think they were in a position to fulfill the expectations that a big name manager would bring in, but either way I'm glad the manager and his press conferences won't be a sideshow to the Cubs season anymore.

He was actually GM and laid the groundwork for the late-'90s dynasty.

This is a big ol' "Meh" for me. I put very little stock in Quade's record at the end of the year. This seems to be a, "We're rebuilding, so let's not spend a bunch of money on a big-name... Maybe we'll even catch lightning in a bottle," type of decision.

It doesn't make me mad, but doesn't get me particularly pumped up either.

Like I said above, I honestly think this is what the Cubs want. I think they want to do whatever they can to lower expectations and still keep the fans content.

Since it's the manager, that is how you should feel. A manager wasn't going to make the difference.

Ryno is apparently on ESPN 1000 right now.

It sounded like he doesn't expect to be back with the Cubs in any role. He said he is taking some time to digest the news and explore his options and he still wants to be a Major League manager. He has not given any thought to returning to Iowa and that is "purely hypothetical." He didn't burn any bridges, but didn't seem extremely open to a return to the Cubs organization.
