The Rangers might draw surprisingly well. Dallas has like six million people and Texas is the 2nd most populace state (of course many of them could be Astros fans). Also I know there are alot of Rangers fans sprinkled throughout Louisiana.

Harold Reynolds saying this Phils/Giants series is one of the biggest upsets in baseball history.... Might be some hyperbole there. Although I suppose I'd have to check.

The cardinals had a few of those just a few years ago, all in one postseason

I'm starting to think the Rangers could be a sleeping giant after all of this. They're in a large market and I could see them kind of taking off like the Mavericks did in basketball. I definitely think that they'll be the favorites to wind up with Lee once the offseason free agency dust settles and with their core of young guys, I could see them becoming perennial contenders, moving their payroll up a ton and drawing in many new fans in the process. Ryan and his group picked a great time to buy this team.

Nitpick, but I thought Texas was #3 in population behind California and New York.

I'm idly curious as to which matchups end up drawing in more viewers when the Red Sox or the NYC teams aren't involved.

The afor mentioned plus Cubs, Phillies, and Dodgers. This doesnt say that other teams have bad fans, its just that they dont have too many out of market fans. Say the Brewers and Twins were to make the series, Im sure theyd fill the stadium without a problem, because both teams have great local fan bases, at least when they're doing well, but they wouldnt get much out of market viewership, because well, aside from Chicago, and maybe Detroit, nobody really cares about the midwest. You often seem to underestimate how huge of an out of market fan base that the Cubs have, its probably 2nd to only the Yankees, maybe the Red Sox. If they were to make the series, it would probably be the highest rated in quite some time because of the 100+ year drought.

That Phillies/Rays WS was even more lower rated than the White Sox/Astros one, so I don't think you can lump the Phillies in with teams that are actually big national draws.

I think I can say with a reasonable degree of certainty that the Cubs are second only to to the Braves in Mississippi. The Cardinals are up there too, but large amounts of Cubs fans are everywhere even deep down in Dixie.

There has been a lot of talk about the new tv deal they got and how its going to give them a lot of payroll flexibility. With that, their farm system, and playing in the West they should be a mainstay in the playoffs for a couple of years.

Why do we even care about ratings? How is it relevant at all to regular folks like us?

How relevant is anything in sports?

I do care about the ratings, even though it's not truly relevant to my life. I want my sport to do well like I want my team to do well.

I'd have to imagine if the Cubs made the series it would be up there with some of the highest rated of all time simply because the Cubs in the World Series would resonate with a lot of people who don't care about baseball. Everyone in the country knows the Cubs and everyone knows them as the ultimate perennial loser.

In '03 everyone in high school who didn't follow baseball or have a favorite team became a Cubs fan.

Kind of amazing to me that the Sox/Astros was the lowest-rated series ever, seeing as Chicago and Houston are two pretty big markets. Although Houston isn't really and Astros town and nobody cares about the White Sox outside of the South Side.

which team has the most ex-Cubs?

Texas:

Playoff Roster: Clay Rapada (0.1 IP with Cubs)

Others on 40 man: Andres Blanco, Rich Harden

San Francisco:

Playoff Roster: Mike Fontenot

Others on 40 man: None

So if you count the 40 man roster, the Rangers have the most ex-Cubs. If you don't, they are tied, but SF gets the edge since Fontenot spent 3 years getting infiltrated with Cubdom and Rapada had only a cup of coffee with the Cubs.

At least Fontenot gets a ring if the Giants win, I keep forgetting he's over there.

I'm going to a Halloween party at an apartment with cablevision this Saturday, so no game three for me. Any good football games on that night?

Oregon/USC, but it looks like it's regional so you might get Ohio State/Minnesota(Really, THAT game gets primetime? Not MSU-Iowa? Not even Michigan/Penn State?)
