5. steals 2 bases down by 11 runs and charges mound

what a dickwad

It was the FOURTH inning and his team was losing. He got himself not only into scoring position, but 90 feet away from home plate. Could have scored on a passed ball, wild pitch, base hit, etc. You can't expect to chip into a lead without scoring runs.

yeah, but down so many runs, you don't need guys getting CS, you need runners on base. What if he had gotten thrown out? I guess the notion was more stupid than anything.

half of those things aren't even douchey

The glove slam, and both catcher "collisions" definitely are douchey... go back and watch the clips.

I'll let the SBs slide. Either way, all of the plays and incidents show Morgan as an idiot if nothing else.

the glove slam is no more douchey than what ted lilly did

My opinion.

None of the individual events are anything to get worked up about (except maybe the Anderson thing), but the accumulation of events that all seem to stem from Morgan having a chip on his shoulder towards the world is what makes him seem like a douche. I almost wonder if he has some serious off-field issues going on that are causing him to lose his cool on the field. He can't seem to take the heat from fans or players.

He is turning into A.J. Pierzinski. Before the fight he did a bunch of little things that made people hate him. Now people are out to get him excessively (the second time the Marlins threw at him).

Sure it is. Morgan thought it was more appropriate to slam his glove into the ground rather than think maybe the ball was still in play and thus award an inside the park homer to the O's. The D'Backs hit a homerun whether or not Lilly slammed his glove.

who hates the marlins?

People with souls

I hate Loria, no doubt. But what do I care about Chris Volstad and Gaby Sanchez? This isn't the Yankees. After its two WS victories, the Fish basically overhauled their entire rosters. So you hate Lee for being part of the team that the Cubs melted down against? I'm not sure I could name 10 players that were on the '03 Marlins.

I guess I'm assuming the hate comes from '03 or from Loria. I could be completely missing something.

I don't think any of these things really qualify as douchey, that word gets thrown around for an awful lot of stuff nowadays. But while what Ted Lilly did was stupid, the play was over when the bat made contact. Wasn't the play still going on with the Nyjer one?

You realize they weren't holding him on ?

they weren't? I thought they were. According to Morgan, since they were still holding him on "I'm gonna roll out" or something.

However, I read somewhere that the Marlins catcher is a rookie and has been terrible at throwing out runners in the minors or something. Then again, Morgan steals a lot and gets caught a lot. It's likely he doesn't know or care about the quality of the catcher.

I do think it's generally not wise to steal bases, esp 3rd, when you're down 11. Risk/reward probably doesn't support the move. But I also don't think it violates any unwritten rule that warrants beaning the guy again. I think Morgan was being a prick b/c he was mad that they hit him and I think the Marlins figured public opinion isn't behind Morgan, so they can throw at him for something dumb like stealing.

They were holding him on. I have no problem with Morgan stealing. If it's bad baseball strategy, then the Marlins should be happy. You don't throw at a guy for being a dumb baseball player. The Marlins are 100% in the wrong

I doubt the Marlins took into account public sentiment toward Morgan in their deliberations.

completely agree

I don't think they sat around and discussed the public's feelings about Morgan. But I'm sure they're aware that he's been acting like an ass and that public perception could have contributed to the general ill will they felt toward him when they decided to bean him again.

It's much more likely that they were just annoyed and pissed off at him so they threw at him using a stupid "rule" as excuse.

He got an additional eight games to his suspension.

ok, so maybe it was more stupid than lilly's. it still wasn't more douchey. it was exactly the same.

The only thing more over the top than the Miami reaction is MLB's suspension. This is ridiculous.

Morgan was plunked as retaliation for what he did to the catcher the previous night. Then Morgan retaliated by stealing those bases, so they threw at him again. It wasn't just for stealing the bases, it was for why he stole the bases.

you get 1 plunking for the catcher and they took that in the 4th. i don't think you get to throw at him again b/c he stole bases b/c he was pissed that you plunked him. that [expletive] can go on forever.

Which is exactly why he got plunked again. If he takes his medicine and stands on first like he would in any other blowout situation, this doesn't happen.
