Darrel Rovell is saying that a full season without Strasburg will cost the Nationals roughly $7 million in addition to what they're losing this year.

Pretty sure you accrue service time while on the 60 day DL. It's how Will Ohman wound up arb-eligible after 1 season of pitching.

Free agency service time?

Yes, again I use Ohman as an example, he was granted free agency after the '08 season.

I'm not gonna lie, this really bums me out as a baseball fan. Sad news. The crazy part is the Nationals did nothing to cause this. They were more protective of him than the secret service is of the President. Guess it was just one of those things you couldn't avoid

It says he signed a minor league contract in March of 2009. Was he granted free agency due to service time or because Atlanta didn't tender him a contract?

Cot's says he has 7+ years of service time after 2009, so probably due to service time.

So this contract eats up 0 arb-eligible years? He'll be arb eligible beginning in 2013 and the Nats will control him through 2015. Do I have that right?

Unless there's a clause in his contract stating otherwise, or he becomes a super-2, he wouldn't be arb eligible until after the 2013 season.

When a player is non-tendered, baseballreference lists it as a release in the transaction history. Ohman was granted free agency due to service time following the '08 season.

2008 was the 6th season he pitched in, and 9th season after his debut.

Well, either way the soonest Strasburg would become a free agent is after the 2015 season. But wasn't that part of the reason they delayed his callup this year, to not give him a full year of service time?

Yes. And with as many rookies that have gotten attention this year, many of them getting called up before Strasburg, I'd be surprised if he wound up as a Super 2.

It's not a matter how many seasons you pitched in, it's full major league service time. Ohman had maybe a month of active major league service time before '05. The rest of his service time was accrued while sitting on the DL in '03 and '04

yeah, i edited. i forgot his contract ended after 2012. so if they control him after this contract runs, it wouldn't be all bad.

He's got 1 year of service time, or less actually. Unless he gets credit for 2011 while out with injury, they will control him for 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016. He would be a free agent (unless he signs past that year) at the age of 28.

Service time accrues on the DL

Yeah, it stinks. They're saying they don't know if it was his last pitch or building over time. They lean toward the last pitch, but you never know. I can't even imagine how devastating this is for Strasburg. I feel for the guy big time.

Bummer. I looked forward to watching him pitch on the Extra Innings package.

Think Rob Dibble realizes what a dolt he is?
