Carlos Silva Hospitalized with Heart Condition

Holy crap.

Carlos Silva was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Denver on Sunday afternoon after experiencing an abnormally high heart rate during his start in an 8-7 loss to Colorado.

The problem was corrected on the way to the hospital, the Cubs said, and Silva was resting comfortably. He will remain in the hospital overnight for observations.

With this season in the toilet and us on the hook for him next year I'd just about shut him down. No reason to risk anything else at this point. Hard to not say we haven't gotten more out of Carlos Silva in 2010 than any of us ever hoped for.

Yeah, at this point he has 2.1 WAR, higher than all but 3 other players (Soto, Soriano, Byrd). Shutting him down would be good for him and allow the opportunity to get rotation spots to the other guys down the line.

It'd be pointless to shut him down unless an ongoing medical risk exists (in which case it's a no-brainer).

"Well we're happy with how you've pitched so far, and the team's going nowhere, so just take the rest of the year off" seems pretty odd.

I want to trade Silva in the offseason, so shutting him down now would not be helping the trade value.

Depends on how you think he'd pitch down the stretch.

I don't think Carlos Silva shut down for rest of the season with heart condition is going to have them beating down the doors

If it is something that the Cubs can get the docs to verify is not a long term problem, it may not impact his value all that much. Posting a 6.50 ERA down the stretch would impact it for certain (not saying it is for sure he would do this, of course).

Then again, I'm not a big believer that a given player being beaten out for playing time really impacts their value all that much if they're a veteran with an established level of performance.
