Johnson would be a nice pickup it would have to take more than Theriot to even get the Cubs to the table.

1B free agent

2B Johnson

SS Castro

3b Ramirez

C Soto

pretty nice offensive potential from the Cubs infield next year.

Johnson is catastrophic away form Arizona, fwiw.

Home: .316/.411/.620/1.031

Away: .232/.310/.359/.669

That being said, I'd much rather have him than Theriot, by a long shot.

So I guess we would just get Johnson to then think it gave us an advantage to re-sign him? Or we could offer arbitration. If he's available for that cheap I'm surprised the White Sox or another contender didn't jump on it.

Kelly Johnson is OK. But someone posted his road numbers this year. Last year he ended with a sub .700 OPS. He's not that good of a fielder. He's 28 years old already and likely not to get better. On the positive side, he has hit well at Wrigley and does have some power.

I would still rather go after a minor league with some sort of upside and take my chances with some combo of Fontenot, Baker, and Barney.

And as an FYI, Kelly Johnson doesn't have enough service time to be a FA next year. He is arbitration eligible and due for free agency after the 2011 season.

Looks like away from home, Johnson is Theriot.

I think I'd rather have Dewitt instead of Johnson.

If reports are right it seems that Hendry is trying to package Theriot in the Lilly deal with the Dodgers in order to get Dewitt back as part of the package. The Johnson thing probably is the back up plan if he can't get the Dodgers deal to work out. Either way I think he is motivated to deal Theriot since otherwise he would probably non tender him in the offseason and would then get nothing back for him except a lot of negative press about letting such a "gamer" go.

Could we then maybe flip DeWitt for Johnson?

If Hendry's preference is to include Theriot in the Dodger deal to get DeWitt, then that means Hendry values DeWitt higher than Johnson. Otherwise, he'd just go ahead and do Theriot/Russell for Johnson now.

Heres my thing with DeWitt. Hes a lefty 2B/3B without much power. Theriots a righty SS/2b with no power. Granted, Id prefer DeWitt over Theriot, but if what your looking for a lefty 2B/3B with just a bit of power, than why the [expletive] would you just take Mike Fontenot off the bloody bench? Meanwhile, Bakers proved he can hit lefties, but not righties ala Reed Johnson, so theres your platoon, then trade Theriot for a sack of potatoes, and call up Braney as a backup SS. Speaking of Dodgers middle infielders without power, what ever happened to than Chin Lung Hu guy? Does he still exist? Edited by Little Slide Rooter

DeWitt is the same players as Kelly Johnson, only younger. Both are very similar to Mike Fontenot. Someone tell Jim that he doesn't have to trade position for position.

Actually, they'd make a pretty decent platoon, thought I'd take DeWitt full time over Fontenot, too, since he doesn't have such appalling splits and he's younger.

He's played 2 games for the Dodgers this year and currently has a .726 OPS in AAA as a 26 year old.

Cubs deal to D-back in their hands now. Theriot and Russell for kelly Johnson who strikes out way too much for leadoff man. Does have 17HRs

I'd do it. Johnson is likely better than Theriot, Fontenot, Barney, etc.

We know how well those guys work out once they put on a Cub uniform.

He was really good in 07 and 08 and didn't play for the Diamondbacks.

Which is why I'd much rather have him than Theriot, by a long shot. He's proven himself in the past, but currently he's abysmal away from Arizone. But we're not winning anything this year, so why not take the risk if all it costs us are some expendable players?
