@BradBiggs Pissed off Cutler in team drills is frustrated with protection, chucks ball out of bounds off top of hospitality tent.

Handful of small kids in tent. Good thing he fired high.

OMG Cutler threw directly at some small kids?

Are the Bears better than the Vikings without Favre?

Probably pretty close but I think so. It's doubtful that Jackson or Rosenfels even come close to the numbers Favre put up last year. Heck I'm not even sure if Favre himself could/will come close to duplicating those numbers. Whether or not he plays could very well determine if there will be playoff football in Chicago this year.

No one is going to replicate those numbers. But they went 10-6 the year before Favre with awful QB play (until Tarvaris was inserted for the last 4 games), fewer weapons on offense and basically the same defense with less depth in the secondary but younger in other places. They also had historically bad special teams that year because of a crazy amount of injuries which was greatly improved last year with health and a new ST coach.

Yeah but CubsBearsMagic is probably considering that he believes the Bears are better than 2 years ago as well, and good enough to make up the 1 game gap they had 2 seasons ago.

Right, the rest of the division is better than it was. It's just amazing all the stuff I've been reading and hearing about "what will the Vikings do, everyone will stack 9 in the box now?!?!?!?!". Well that's what happened Adrian's first two years and they won the division with Gus stinking up the joint. It's the NFL, anything can happen. With Favre I think they're the most talented team in the division but the other two are still good enough to jump them depending on health and breaks.

Correct, although I thought the 2008 Bears team overachieved quite a bit.

Anyways, with more established weapons at WR now I still see the Vikings doing quite a bit of passing even without Favre. I'm not even sure what to make of Peterson these days. His YPC has steadily gotten worse since his rookie year and he can't hang onto the ball. I'm sure there are reasons for the former but still. He can still take over a game, but perhaps he's not as terrifying as he was in 2007.

Who is going to be 2nd on their depth chart for RB? Albert Young?

Toby Gerhart.

Paints a pretty rosy picture. It's just too early for me to say anything about anything right now.

I will be at the Family Night practice Friday, as it turns out. I've never actually done that before.

They've starting throwing to him much more. His passing yardage went way up last year. Even though his total yards and ypc were down, his total yards from scrimmage remained the same. His # of fumbles actually went down slightly last year.

I'm with you, not sure what to make of it. Although -- I wouldn't expect to see year after year of 1,700 yards rushing. He's going to suffer wear and tear like any other RB, and defenses will continue to key on him when & where they can.

People evaluating the Bears at this point keep saying how the receivers are getting seperation, but I think that's got a lot to do with our secondary being not all that good.

Maybe. But it's not like a WR getting seperation is a rare occurence. The Bears are going to see Sidney Rice twice, Greg Jennings twice, Calvin Johnson twice, Randy Moss and others. They are going to get seperation a lot. The key is minimizing the damage done when a WR seperates and getting to the QB to not allow him to take advantage of it.

Knox, Hester, and Aromashodu should be able to seperate with their speed, and it's a good sign that they are able to do it in practice.

I just don't see how anything said this early on really means much of anything.

Peterson's still a beast but he's not the most patient runner in the world. Maybe it's the blocking. A few years ago they were wrecking teams with that stretch/zone blocking play where AD would get on the 2nd level and just run by/over people. Seemed like it got stuffed a lot last year.

True, but the Bears do have some of the best straight line speed in the league with Knox and Hester.

So far the offensive line is looking terrible and that is a cause for concern even if it is the preseason.

Wow...a week from Saturday we get the first Bears preseason game. Seems like I've been waiting forever, but now it's right around the corner!

I know it's just preseason, but I'll take what I can get at this point.

This will be the last weekend of the year without football.

Even this weekend isn't without football. The Hall of Fame Game is Sunday night.

I heard Hub Arkush mention this, but I never posted it. He said the Bears would have been better off with Aaron Kampman and Antron Rolle for the money that they spent on Peppers. Maybe they could have kept Alex Brown too. Does anyone know if the money the Bears spent on Peppers is more than what would have been spent on Kampman, Rolle, and Brown (assuming the Bears paid what those guys are getting this year)?

i know that arkush hates the bears and whatever they do is the wrong thing.
