Thought it was interesting to see that our old preseason friend Mike Haas is on the Seahawks training camp roster. I hope that somehow he makes the team so that he gets a chance to prove or unprove himself in the regular season.

Clyde Emrich, one of the NFL's first strength coaches, has worked with countless Bears players during his 40 years with the organization.

So who was the strongest Bears player of all time?

"Pound-for-pound, I would point to Walter Payton," Emrich said Sunday night as the Bears practiced at Olivet Nazarene University. "I know what he was capable of, and he had done what we call a dead lift of 625 pounds."

if a deadlift is the same thing we call it, then that's not very impressive. I knew a junior in high school who did 625, and he couldn't have weighed much over 200. Hell I did 525 and I weighed 180 pounds.

Christian Cuspard's love for football led him into weightlifting, which in turn helped him set a world record for his age (17-19 years) and weight (177 pounds) when he deadlifted an amazing 541 pounds in late May at the Buckeye Hall of Fame Classic in Canton, Ohio.

He first lifted 450 pounds, then 500. Knowing the world record was 540, he asked for 541 on his final lift.

I'm curious to what their definition of a deadlift is compared to ours, because yes there must be a difference. But yes I'll let him know, aren't you just so witty

Ahh no we didn't do it quite like that. We stood inside of a diamond shaped bar, weights were closer and the grip was different. Looks like the start of a power clean.

I would assume that's pretty standard...

The record for the tire deadlift (in which hummer tires are used in place of plates) under Strongman rules where lifting straps are allowed is 498.9 kg (1100 lbs) by Benedikt Magnússon.

The record for an equipped deadlift (a deadlift performed using a deadlift suit using a standard bar and plates) is 457.5 kg (1009 lbs) by Andy Bolton.[2]

The record for a raw deadlift (a deadlift performed without the aid of a deadlift suit) is 432.5 kg (953 lbs) by Andy Bolton.[3]

Pound for pound Alonzo Spellman was the strongest Bear of all time.

I said I wouldn't do it, but the hype is starting to get me excited. I'm reading great things about guys like Forte, Tommy Harris, and Urlacher really playing like their old selves. And supposedly Major Wright is turning heads, and might even have a shot to start next to Chris Harris. I'm still way concerned about the O-line, so I won't get myself as pumped about the offense as I'd like to, but if we can keep everybody healthy, we might have fun watching this D again.

Paul Allen (voice of the Vikings on the radio) was just on the Score giving high praise to the Bears. Said Chester Taylor was one of the biggest pickups of any club during the offseason. Says he never misses a blitz pickup, ever (as Bear fans can attest, if true it is huge). Said Mike Tice is the best coach at getting maximum effort from minimum talent, and was a huge pickup for the Bears.

It's interesting to hear because the man hates all things Bears and rarely misses an opportunity to take shots at Chicago. Allen is the play-by-play guy best known for his announcing of the Vikings loss to Arizona at the end of the season a couple years ago. I think he's one of the best NFL play-by-play guys on the radio.

Typical offseason fluff. It's truly meaningless. I mean it might not be but there's even odds that it is.

Even preseason games don't mean anything. Remember when Cutler walked into Denver and tore up the Broncos in what was described as a playoff atmosphere? Didn't change [expletive].

The Bears will stink, false optimism, etc, etc.

Football season always gets me excited. The combination of the last few beach days of the year, with no more 100 degree humid days, smaller crowds, and then driving home early Sunday morning to watch the games is just the best.

If it was Jeff Joniak, then it would be typical offseason fluff. The fact that it comes from the enemy makes it more interesting than that.

Nobody said comments like those mean the Bears are going to win. They're interesting comments in the absence of real games.

But he's talking specifically about guys whose greatest achievements occured in Vikings uniforms. He's blowing smoke up their butts.

They're not Vikings anymore. They are the enemy now, to him.

I didn't really mean that wasn't going to get excited for football, though I certainly see how you got that from my post. I just meant that I told myself I wasn't going to let the Bears hype get me overly excited/optimistic about the Bears chances...but I can't help it.

Yeah, but all the excitement about football in general inevitably awakens my suppressed optimism for the Bears. If they win their first game I'll have them penciled into the 2nd round of the playoffs.
