Even if you assume the Phils can't add a cent of payroll and are getting Oswalt free this year, they're STILL getting Oswalt for 9M next year. Until we hire Jim Bowden midseason 2011, Ed Wade is easily the worst GM in baseball

Isn't it weird that within the last ~365 days the Phillies have been able to trade for Cliff Lee, Roy Halladay, and Roy Oswalt?

Goes to show you how strong their farm system has been throughout that time.

Well, it also goes to show how stupid Ed Wade is. Villar is a 19-year-old shortstop who is OPSing .690 in A-ball. Gose is OPSing .710 in the FSL. J.A. Happ will make a good third starter. That would be a good package if the Astros got rid of Oswalt's salary. But they're paying most of it.

Actually it more goes to show what little leverage Ed Wade has in this situation. If there was a better offer out there, don't you think he would've taken it?

As-is, his choices were to do this trade, or to continue to pay Oswalt $16M in hopes of staying out of last place.

Personally, I think the D-Backs did better than the Astros did. Which doesn't bode well for us with Lilly. If I thought Hendry actually WOULD offer arbitration, I'd be pulling for that scenario right now.

I'd keep a player before paying nearly most of his salary and getting an underwhelming package. Maybe in the offseason they could have gotten more.

Unless you were under strict orders to cut costs ASAP.

davearm's two options were keep and pay him or trade him for an underwhelming package and still pay a large portion of his deal.

If you have to trade him no matter what, there's not much you can do.

Haren/Oswalt and Lilly aren't necessarily comparable since Lilly doesn't have a massive contract tied to him.

That said, it appears the Astros failed to shed as much of that contract as they should have.

Interesting.

The Astros will flip newly-acquired prospect Anthony Gose to the Blue Jays, reports ESPN's Jayson Stark. The speedy, defensively-talented center fielder went to Houston as part of the Roy Oswalt deal.

Apparently the Jays had interest in Gose in the Halladay deal.

Wow.

Deal looks better for the stros now.

He's a 23 year old with a mid 800's OPS in the PCL right now, coming off a disappointing 2009, with questions about his future position. He's interesting, but is he all that valuable?

I probably would have liked to have turned Lilly into him though.

Wallace isn't going to be great defensively, but he can hit. His OPS is almost .870, that's higher than "mid .800s" Has shown 20 HR power, despite being jerked around between 4 teams, 3 levels, and 3 minor leagues. His .868 OPS this year, is right in line with his career minors numbers.

I think mid 800s is a fair statement for an 868. I looked at it earlier and only remembered the 860 part. Still, he's got 28 guys ahead of him in the PCL and he's a 1B.

Brett Wallace was ranked 20th overall by Keith Law and 27th by Baseball America, and Jason Grey of ESPN ranks Wallace as the 6th best prospect in the minors right now. He's not without his flaws, but he's obviously somewhat highly regarded as a prospect. I'm a little shocked they got him for this guy.

I think at this point he's strictly a 1B now. Seems the Disastros are now shopping Lance Berkman

The Astros are discussing possible trades involving Lance Berkman, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter). Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported this afternoon (via Twitter) that a high-ranking executive told him the Astros could move Berkman and start rebuilding.

Like former teammate Roy Oswalt, who was traded to Philadelphia earlier today, Berkman has a no-trade clause and can veto any deal. About $5.4MM remains on Berkman's $14.5MM salary this season. The Astros hold a $15MM option for next year, but they can buy it out for $2MM. Berkman is hitting .245/.372/.436 so far in 2010.
