I'm all for retaining Rothschild and Jaramillo. They are among the best at their jobs in baseball. I'd retain Wilken based on his track record, but I'd probably ask him to target things differently. There are some people on the minor league side of operations that I'd keep around (Von Joshua, Jody Davis, a few others). The marketing group is still outstanding.

Crane Kenny, but he'll have nothing to do with the baseball side of things.

 

I'd keep Trammel as the mgr, but I think Ricketts wants Sandberg (yuk). I agree with Rotchschild, Jaramillo, and the rest of the baseball guys except for Wilken. I don't think a guy like him will be told how to target things.

 

EDIT: BTW, Bruce Miles doesn't think Hendry is a goner after the season. It's really shocking to me that he might not go.

Hendry HAS to be a goner. I don't disagree with Bruce very often, but on this I do.

 

I might also be in favor of keeping Fleita given the resurgence of the farm system.

Just judging from reading his blog I think he thinks Hendry should be gone, but he thinks he won't be.

Riggins is great. He's had multiple chances to be a major league pitching coach (he was with the Cardinals for a short time) but prefers to work with minor leaguers. I'm biased because I know him, but he is very good at what he does.

what are the examples that make rudy jaramillo so great? he's left texas and texas is 3rd in the majors in runs scored. does the ballpark in arlington make rudy appear better than he is?

seriously? no one was expecting dempster to be any good as a starter in chicago, and he's done very well. he got 3 adequate years out of jason marquis. he got 2 serviceable years out of glendon rusch. carlos silva was literally the worst pitcher in baseball last season, and now under larry he's been very good.

 

larry has bailed out hendry's bad moves many times. i can't see how he can be perceived as anything but an excellent pitching coach.

Well, he's gotten the credit he deserves in the short time he's been in the Cubs system.

I'm back and forth on keeping Wilken. He's done a pretty good job of targeting relative unknowns and sleepers. Plus, he hasn't had a whole lot of money to spend on the draft. Assuming the Ricketts family starts spending more on the draft, he should do a better job. However, I have issues with how it doesn't seem like he values players relative to how other teams value those players. It seems like his record with the Cubs has more reaches than steals.

The only people in the organization I would keep 100% are Rothschild and Riggins. And I would probably keep most of the minor league instructors. I don't understand why Jaramillo is getting a free pass either, but I will admit that I'd keep him around for the work he has done with the young players (Colvin, Soto, Castro) and the guys he is familiar with (Soriano, Byrd).

 

What I'd imagine will happen though is that Hendry will be back. Piniella will be back if he wants to be (probably doesn't wan to be back), if not Trammell's the manager and everyone else stays, with maybe a few exceptions. I think the 2011 Cubs will be similar to the 2010 Bears in that they will give this regime one more chance to do something. Like it or not, I think the 3 straight winning seasons bought Hendry some time like the Superbowl did for Lovie and co.

Wilken knows his stuff. He stays. Hendry and Lou are both gone. Rothschild and Jaramillo both stay. I wouldn't mind giving Trammel a shot as manager.

I kind of agree with all of this actually. I'd just add that I'd hire someone other than Sandberg to be our next manager.

I think the scouts don't get enough blame for this team being bad for so long. They need to be axed. Plus minor league instructors who fail to teach the farm guys fundamentals and stress playing the game the right way. So basically most of them at the lower levels. Basically a complete organization restructuring beyond Sandberg, Jaramillo, and a few of the others guys others have mentioned.

Hire new men to replace all the fired, and hire some more. The Cubs spend less on advance scouting than anyone else in MLB.
