Yeah - the source isn't all that credible, but it's fun to think about. I would prefer to get Heisey, Brad Boxberger AND Donnie Joseph, but I'm probably living in a dream. Does anyone think it would be possible if we added another piece on our end?

[expletive] no. The only way Id want to do that deal is if in adition theyd take either Soriano, Zambrano, or Fukudome and their entire contract. Marmols the type of guy who can be a star closer for years to come, and as far as outfielders go, were stuck with Soriano for the next 4 years, we have Marlon Byrd for cheap for 2, and then we have Colvin and Brett Jackson coming up, not to mention several other AA and AAA outfilelders who look like they could be just as good as Heisey.

I might understand this deal if Hendry already had a deal with another team set up to take an OF, but like you said it doesn't make much sense to add another OF.

I have no problem trading Marmol but you have to get Yonder Alonso in any trade with the Reds so you can replace Lee.

Agreed. The price for star players are always higher inside the division. I don't have a problem with either trading Marmol, or trading him within the division, but yes you have to get Alonso back in the deal. And if you do, you official kick off a rebuilding stage for the Cubs.

I dont know too much about Alonso, but if hes a top 1B prospect, Id be all about the swap, however, with Cordero, theyd essentialy be trading him for a set up man, and if hes that good of a prospect, they could probably get more. Also, if hes really that good, they might prefer to wait until the offseason or next year to trade Votto instead.

But this is Dusty Baker we are talking about.

I doubt there's a thing to the rumor, but for those wondering:

Heisey is 26 years old and has a .296/.367/.459/.825 career minor league OPS. His best OPS in a minor league season was .900 at 24 years old between AA and AAA.

I don't know any more than that, but those numbers don't thrill me.

Now if we do trade Marmol, whose out closer? The only other guy who really has closer stuff is Cashner, and he'll be more valuabke in the future as a starter. Maybe Zambrano, although that is a very risky proposition.

My guess is Cashner. He's been talked about as a future closer anyway and they could consider this a chance to get his feet wet in the role. Z is an option too to try to raise his value a bit again.

This makes no sense for the Cubs. I also don't mind selling high on Marmol, but there has to be more we can get for him than a guy who's basically Tyler Colvin with more walks. And I read the comments on that rumor and no one believes it, but this guy claims it's true and "that's what his birdies are telling him." I call shenanigans.

Nobody else at all is reporting this that I can find, so either he's got the extremely early scoop or there's nothing to this.

1) I doubt this is true.

2) Marmol is too valuable a commodity to trade for a guy like that. If you're not getting a premium prospect in return, there's no reason to trade him.

Wow, Yonder Alonso has been brutal this year. The Reds should have drafted Justin Smoak if they wanted a first baseman that year.

I wouldn't trade Marmol unless we got a great package in return. Marmol is the kind of player we should be building around. However, I do realize he may be one of our only tradeable players who isn't named Ted Lilly.

we have a lot of tradeable players other than LIlly, however, much like Marmol, they're the guys who we should be hanging on to.
