i cant even be upset at aram and lee, really. this team would blow even with the two of them hitting well, and they've given us so much in their careers that i'm willing to look past them and just OH WHAT THE [expletive] KOYIE HILL IS STARTING AGAIN

I've wondered about that myself and I'm not sure if that statement is true.

Cubs overall:

.253/.319/.392 (13th BA, 13th OBP, 13th SLG, 13 OPS, 14th runs scored)

Cubs without Lee and Ramirez at all:

.263/.326/.404 (4th BA, 10th OBP, tied 8th SLG, 10th OPS)

If you take Lee and Ramirez's 3 year averages and apply them to this year (giving them only the number of at-bats they've had this year):

Cubs with regular Lee and Ramirez

.271/.336/.426 (2nd BA, 4th OBP, 3rd SLG, 3rd OPS)

Somebody can check my calculations, but I'm pretty sure they're close. Lee and Ramirez are the difference between this team being really good and really bad this year.

i'd rather live in ignorance, dammit

This is more an indictment of both players than an indictment of just one of them...

Castro is 20 and can still provide value with a SLG% that low. Derrek Lee is 34 and cannot.

If Lee was still able to post an OBP in the .360-.400 area like he has the past three years, he could still have some value with a low SLG (though not enough). But his OBP has dropped quite a bit as well.

Castro is posting a .302 wOBA. He's not a major-league quality hitter at this point and probably shouldn't even be in the majors. Lee's struggles are at least partially due to BABIP, though he's hitting more groundballs than last season and he's whiffing a lot more.

Lee is currently at .372 and Castro is at .382.

Castro is currently costing the Cubs $1,050 for each slugging percent.

Lee is currently costing the Cubs $34,946 for each slugging percent.

With this line – .376/.421/.569/.990 – in AA this year, he was too advanced for that level. I could see wanting him at AAA, but I also don't see a problem with letting him get ML at bats this year either to see how he adjusts. His numbers this season aren't all that important given his age, either.

He was doing really well, but I don't see how he was "too advanced" for AA.

The numbers make it look like he was ready for a more challenging level maybe.

Sure, but they don't say he would suffer from staying there too long.

Right, which is why I'd have had no problem with him remaining there. However, his current ML numbers this year shouldn't really affect the evaluation of him much. Whereas DLee's should.

Lowering the min. PA to 100, Castro is 24th among SS in wOBA, it's not really a loaded position. He's tied for 21st in WAR despite not playing the first 5 weeks.

His .717 OPS would be 5th overall among AL SS. It's amazing how bad they've been.

The NL OPS is just .729. It's amazing how bad everybody has been.
