There are some fun correlations between Simpson and Billy Wagner. Small pitchers with big heat drafted in the middle of the first round from a podunk southern college.

Back on a depressing note, looking at that 1st round is sad. Cubs take Kieschnick at 10, and then:

12: Billy Wagner

14: Derrek Lee

15: Chris Carpenter

16: Alan Benes

20: Torii Hunter

21: Jason Varitek

I think it's great that Wilken isn't afraid of what anyone else thinks when he makes his picks. I think it's baffling that he doesn't use that to his advantage.

It's great that he doesn't care what anyone else thinks. That's a great strength. However, even if for some reason this joker was #1 overall on your draft board, if everyone else has him rated as low as he was, you're a freakin' moron if you take him with your #1 overall pick. That should have waited until at LEAST the 2nd round, if not the 3rd. With as loaded as this draft is, you could have still gotten two really good talents before Simpson.

You have no idea where everyone else had him rated. None. All it takes is one team to have him ranked in the next 49 picks and the top guy you had on your board at 16 is gone.

I must say I'm shocked that you would rant about this and call him "a freakin' moron". And why are you saying this draft was loaded? You have no idea.

I guess time will tell about the Simpson pick. But each team has a general idea of what other teams needs are, their previous draft histories, what kind of players they like, etc. If the Cubs had a general idea that nobody had him on their radar this high, they essentially wasted a pick. However, I guess if they had a feeling that he wasn't going to be there their next pick and this was their top overall player, then I guess they did the right thing.

And we got the two way player.

imb's right though it seems odd that Lee and Benes were in the same draft.

Whe Josh Sale was still sitting there at 16, I was thinking we would pass on him to take O'Conner and it would have made me a little mad, but I would have been alright with it eventually. But, to see us take this guy instead of either of them is just odd, to say the least. I know Wilken is good, but we BETTER spend some damn money tomorrow, or else I'll be questioning ownership bigtime.

So who's still on the board that would be a good value at 67?

Workman

Allie

Eibner

Cole

Wilson

Paxton

Any other favorites?

Along with those guys, I really like Jarrett Parker and Ryne Stanek. Some other guys ranked really high are Yordy Cabrera, Ryan LaMarre, and Chad Bettis.

For some reason, I can see the Cubs taking Derek Dietrich in the 2nd round. ACC routes, up the middle player, lefty hitter with decent pop. But, I'd much rather grab ANY of the guys you just named or the ones I just listed as well.

What about LeVon Washington? How far has his stock fallen? How bad is Jessie Hahn hurt? If DeAndre Smelter is signable, he'd be a nice pickup for us.

A few other guys I would like to see us get(1 or 2 of these guys would be great) along with one of the aforementioned guys anyway.......

3B Dominic Ficocielllo

C Alex Lavisky

OF Reggie Golden

OF Kendrick Perkins

OF Angelo Gumbs

3B Chad Lewis

OF Mel Rojas Jr

SS Niko Goodrum

C Matt Roberts

P AJ Vanegas (tough sign)

P Kevin Gausman

P Drew Cisco

P Scott Frazier

P Eric Jaffe

P Rob Rasmussen

P Adam Duke

P John Simms

P John Barbato

P Cody Buckel

P Evan Rutckyj

Why is Stetson Allie still out there though? This is the biggest question I have right now? He threw 100 MPH yesterday, if I'm not mistaken. Maybe this is a classic case of the obvious: We don't know what the scouts know? I really want to find out why he's still there, but we probably never will.

Cole struggled as of late, so he's kind of understandable, I guess. That said, I'd love for Hendry's Florida connections to kick in, if he's still there.

Goldstein's top 10 that's left and his take on them paraphrased.......

1. Stetson Allie- Priced himself out of the market.

2. Brett Eibner- Teams look at him as a pitcher and he wants to be a hitter.

3. Austin Wilson- Too raw to warrant giving out the huge bonus he's wanting.

4. Brandon Workman- Teams see him as a reliever.

5. Yordy Cabrera- Million + seems awfully high for a 20 year old HS Senior, but should go quick tomorrow.

6. AJ Cole- Signability is NOW an issue, as he wants money as if he were a pick in the 20's.

7. Sam Solis- The run on projectable HS arms hurt him, since he's got less upside, but should go early tomorrow.

8. Jedd Gyorko- Lack of defensive position hurt him, but he should go quick tomorrow too.

9. Ryne Stanek- Too much, too soon. Scouts didn't believe in his newfound velocity

10. Jesse Hahn- Left game yesterday with forearm tightness and there is no update on his injury as of yet.

OF Mel Rojas Jr

Very toolsy, production didn't match tools as he swung and missed far too often at the JUCO level which is scary given the rise in competition and wood bats.

I really would like to get Yordy Cabrera and move him to a corner spot, IF or OF. A lot of other intriguing guys. If Eibner makes it that far, I'd let him swing the bat in the OF and see how he goes. Allie or Cole would be great. I am somewhat thinking that Micah Gibbs might end up being our pick, or maybe a Derek Dietrich.

If it's what it took to get him to sign, I wouldn't mind pulling a Casey Kelly with Eibner.

I like Garin Cecchini if the Cubs are willing to get him out of his LSU commitment.

I think if Rickett's comments are true the Cubs will overslot someone like Allie or Cole here in round 2.

I'd really like to see a hitter with plus power.
