Without one of the big 3, absolutely.

Not really. It just means it take a little bit longer. Land either Boozer or Lee and you fill a hole right now. In 6 months, you might be able to acquire a nice SG, to fill another hole. Landing Bosh/James/Wade would make the job easier, but there is are more then one way to build a contender.

The Bulls did not clear massive amounts of salary cap space to get Carlos Boozer or David Lee. Either of those paired with one of the 3 "bigs" would be fine...but by themselves...the Bulls would be a FA loser.

I'm nt ready to embrace that defeatist attitude, yet.

Nobody's saying they have no chance at the big 3, but I don't know how you could view David Lee and Kyle Korver as a nice offseason.

I really think the Bulls need to make a huge Bosh push. I think that strongly increases the likelihood of getting one of LBJ or Wade...and since they might go back to their own teams (and Bosh isn't), it really seems like he's the one to make a point of going after.

And people were complaining about someone sounding like KyleJRM in this thread.

I'm not really a Bulls fan, so I don't think I'm being a downer. That's just the reality of the NBA: You need multiple elite players to win a championship, with very rare exceptions.

I get the realty of the NBA, but I also know that you don't walk into elite players, either. Boston took advantage of Danny Ainge's relationship with Kevin McHale and got Kevin Garnett not to mention getting Ray Allen. Both were already on their decline when Boston got them. LA got lucky when Chris Wallace became a punch line to a joke when he gave Gasol to the Lakers. Vince Carter went to NJ but I don't believe he was an elite player at the time of the trade. Elite players do not leave their teams in their primes, they just don't. I think the last one to do it was Shaq in 96. Hill was injuried, and McGrady left Toronto before his prime. So getting James/Wade/Bosh were longshots at best.

But here is the good news for the Bulls, by the end of the 2010-11 season Rose will be a bonafide superstar. Not to mention Noah is quickly becoming an elite rebounder/shot-blocker/hustle player. So we got the two important positions filled already. Not all is gloom and doom if the Bulls don't land anybody.

Do you think a team will ever be able to win a championship with Rose as it's best player? I love Rose, but I don't think so.

According to NBA.com's Art Garcia, several teams have contacted free agent guard Roger Mason Jr. about the possibility of signing Mason to a multi-year deal.

According to Garcia, Portland, Miami, Chicago, and New York have all contacted Mason this off-season. San Antonio, who employed Mason for the past two seasons, have reportedly not contacted him.

Lee/Korver would not be my ideal offseason, but both players would plug holes the Bulls have. Lee would be a bigger upgrade at PF, then what the Knicks did by going from Lee to Amar'e, and Korver would create space with his 3 point shooting ability. Again, unless something fell into the Bulls lap, Lee/Korver would be a decent offseason, not one all Bulls fans were hoping for, but not one that is even remotely as bad as say Ron Mercer/Brad Miller offseasn.

I don't know. The young man will be 22 yrs old in October, and we haven't seen what he can do at his best. I might agree with you Dex, cause Philly didn't win with AI, etc. But then again teams with elite guards, really need at the minimum an above average big, something AI didn't have in Philly. The book is still out on Rose and his ability to lead.

Except this offseason was all about the big star free agents, and the Bulls made all sorts of moves to plan for the big stars, so if they don't get one, they will have gotten shut out. It doesn't mean the franchise ceases to exist, it would mean they missed out on their targets.

I'd say Mutumbo was an above average big.

Good point on realgm:

If Chicago makes that sign and trade with Toronto do you really think Wade or Lebron would come to Chicago making less money then him?

Report: Bosh won’t agree to Cavaliers sign-and-trade

LeBron James may return to the Cavaliers, but Chris Bosh doesn’t want to go with him

http://www.myfoxchicago.com/dpp/sports/lebron-james-twitter-sign-cleveland-chicago-20100706

There are reports out of Cleveland from the athletic director at LeBron's high school, St. Vincent-St. Mary, who is telling people LeBron will have a press conference there Thursday to announce his decision. LeBron and his handlers aren't commenting on this story, but the timing would be right on considering Thursday is the first day free agents can sign contracts with their teams. And what better a place to do it than LeBron’s high school, to which he's remained very close?

This sounds like he's staying in Cleveland.

That's what I think too, but where else would he announce it?

My first thought on reading that was if he's staying, he could just announce down at the Cavs' arena or practice facility. If this is true, I think it means he's leaving.

I know it's mostly a business decision, but I will have more respect for LBJ if he stays in Cleveland. I think it's a wonderful story. Also, I like the Bulls but I'm not emotionally invested in the NBA, so the sports fan in me loves a good home town story.

Also if he's decided he's staying, why not announce it at his camp? Why wait until Thursday?
