Bruce Miles on Starlin Castro

Those footsteps you're hearing are those of Starlin Castro. He extended his hitting streak to nine games, going 2-for-3 last night for Tennessee (AA) with a walk, a double, 2 runs and 2 RBI. During the streak, he's 19-for-42 (.452), and he has 10 multihit games for the season. His overall line after 11 games is .380/.396/.620 for an OPS of 1.016. He's 19-for-50 with 2 doubles, 3 triples, 1 homer and 12 RBI.

I wonder if they'd keep Theriot in the lineup by moving him to 2nd full time (if Castro gets the call) even if Fontenot was still hitting well. Seems like the kind of dumb thing they'd do.

His .596 OPS is pretty sexy.

My guess is they would try to move one of them for a cheap average MR guy.

Is there any fiancee we will see him up soon? Like, late May?

Was that some sort of weird Freudian slip?

I'm racking my brain to think of what Mr. Freud would suggest he had in mind when he slipped the word fiancee in there while talking about Stalin Castro, but I just can't find an approporiate connection.

Yes, hence "weird". :)

I got a chance to watch Starlin Castro play in Jackson, thanx to my host OleMissCub, when the Smokies visited the Mississippi Braves on Sun 11 April. Starlin went 0-4 with a strikeout or two, and lost a foul pop up in the sun right in front of the 3rd base dugout for an error. All in all, it was a very unimpressive performance. I'm very glad to see that that one game appears to be an aberration. Looking forward to seeing Darlin' Starlin at Wrigley Field real soon !!

I bought you that ticket and you don't mention me in your post! I'm hurt :-)

I just don't know what became of my manners.

It was worth the cost to hear you tell tales of witnessing the 1969 season. Great stories, Fred!

Probably. This would be the time to shop Theriot, but more likely is to put Castro at SS with Theriot at 2B, and have Fontenot start vs. some of the tougher righties and have Baker as the super sub.

nice IsoD.

Yeah, that jumped out at me too. That slugging is all kinds of nice, though.

he didn't walk much last year, but if he can make consistent hard contact (which seems to be his greatest asset at the plate) and keep the ball in play, he projects as a .300+ hitter in the big leagues and the lack of walks won't kill him. the biggest concern with guys who have a poor walk rate is that they can't make enough contact.

obviously castro's numbers are a little crazy right now - his BABIP is something like .470 - but the emergence of power is really exciting. he has 15 singles, 6 doubles, 4 triples and 1 homer so far, or 42.3% of his hits have been for extra bases. last year only 22.9% of his hits went for extra bases. i noticed in the game recaps and minor league gamecasts that it seems like he's hitting the ball in the air more, and this is the case - his fly ball rate is up (from 31.4% in 2009 to 37.3% this year) and line drive rate is up (from 16.2% to 23.5%) while his ground ball rate is down (from 52.2% to 39.2%). while more fly balls turn into outs than ground balls, you're also going to get more extra base hits this way. let's face it, if castro hits .305 every year with little patience, little power and a good glove, then he's a good shortstop but not a top-tier guy. if he develops power where he can hit 55-70 XBH's and pitchers have to approach him more carefully, then you might see some patience emerge and he'll be an all star. gap power emerging just after turning 20 is another really promising sign for his future.

Yeah, I really like to see Starlin developing power. That was something I wanted to see all of last year and it appears that as he ages and fills out a bit, the power is coming. That's really nice to see.

I only glanced at his line the first time and saw .300/.396 but then I saw your post and realized I had read it wrong.
