and yeah, the nhl has been a pretty dysfunctional league for most of its history, in addition to the general wackiness of professional hockey historically and culturally. that's why something like the 'hawks fief-like status to the redwings could fly. quite a shame, but we have years of dominating the wings to look forward to. the trends are clear, chicago is better than detroit at everything except post-apocolyptic cityscapes.

I will wager you a nickle that the Wings finish higher then the Hawks next season

do you sniff the hell out of your own farts, too?

I think I could easily make a case that the Wings will probably be better next season and the Hawks will drop off some. Not sure why you guys think this is off base.

why is a team with most of its top players still improving likely to drop off some next year?

Cap problems will force them to drop a couple of key second-tier forwards.

Not off base at all but you express so much confidence.

Not to be a huge homer, but I think people are going overboard on this "Hawks are going to get rid of half their team and not be elite next year" thing. I would agree that our depth is a big part of what makes us good, but I think we have too much top end talent that like mentioned here is still getting better, or at least at their peak level of performance to suggest that we can't compete for the Cup next year as well. I true those in charge to find a way to make it work. I think we have decent depth at Rockford to replace some of the production of a Sharp or Versteeg.

Also, while the Wings will likely be healthy, don't forget we'd have a full year of Hossa and Niemi playing.

I am not saying the Hawks are going to drop off a lot, they will still get 110 points minimum. They will still be an elite team, no question.

There is a lot of talk in Blackhawk land and other teams that the Wings are going to drop off for some reason. I dont understand why people think this. If Lidstrom retires he will be very hard to replace, but he also has a 7 mill cap hit.

i wouldn't say with any confidence that the wings will be healthy. holmstrom always misses a bunch of games and is old. rafalski and lidstrom (if he returns) are old; draper is old, kronwall and cleary always get hurt. it's an old roster with a number of injury-prone players. they can replace lidstrom with another d-man but they don't have big cap problems and the $7M cap hit isn't as big a deal as replacing his talent and leadership. the best d-men out there are probably niedermayer, gonchar, maybe paul martin? pretty far cry from lidstrom.

yeah the main thing is having top two lines back and two top defense pairings. let's say they get rid of versteeg. they'll still have:

buff-toews-kane

ladd-hossa-sharp

keith-seabrook

campbell-hjarmallsson

plus a third line of something like kopecky-bolland-brouwer. that's still a deep, young, talented team. sure it's nice to have really good checkers like madden but you can find defensively-responsible forwards for pretty cheap on the open market (the flyers got ian laperriere for $1m/year and blair betts was a non-roster invitee).

I'll care about the Wings when they are playing hockey again. Right now it's all about the Hawks and the Flyers.

I hope I can find this game in Louisville, supposedly there's a couple of Cubs bars, so those will probably be the best bet. GO HAWKS

Wouldn't just about any sports bar be able to put this on? It's on NBC.

Keys for the Blackhawks

1) Defensive responsibility. Keep Philadelphia under 30 shots, preferably under 25. Philly doesn't have a Sedin or Thornton line, they just have solid depth all the way through, so this needs to be a team effort.

2) Stay out of the penalty box! For a team that plays physically but not *that* physically, it sure seems they take a lot of penalties. A lot of silly little penalties, usually involving a wayward stick.

3) Make them skate. Philadelphia is a strong skating team, especially at forward, but they don't want their four-D rotation being forced to skate up and down the ice a lot.

Keys for the Flyers:

1) Finish chances. Every time I've seen the Flyers play, they score their goals by capitalizing on defensive breakdowns. They won't get a ton of those vs. the Hawks, most likely, but they can win by burying them.

2) Clear rebounds. The Blackhawks haven't faced a set of defensemen this good at clearing the front of the crease in the playoffs. They aren't going to be able to keep the net clear before the shot, but like Seabrook, they should be excellent at clearing it after.

3) Puck possession. Deny the cycle and the long shifts in their own end.

My guide says it's on Versus. It is on NBC?
