To defend Weber a bit, he went all spazzy because the media and coach hairpiece's adoring fans wouldn't let go of him. Self's southern charm won them all over, and they weren't going to like the dorky Purdue guy coming in to replace him. You still see the cult of Self operating here and there amongst Illinois media and fans. It's a really strange phenomenon.

He was fine until he did the funeral thing. Not sure what he thought that would prove?

He's not the most savvy guy in the world. It worked on the team though.

The interesting thing about all of this to me is that Weber is looking around a bit. He must be starting to feel a bit of heat.

like i said, it may have been the right thing to do at the time.

the self cult phenomenon was influenced heavily by the inferiorityjilted lover complex a lot of us illini fans continue to have, weber was a rebound, we thought self was the one even though he was never really our coach.

we were evolving into a top program at the time, self had taken us to an elite 8 and a sweet 16, we had a great season the year before with mostly freshmen, even though we were upset by notre dame shooting out of their minds in the tourney. we were poised to make a couple of deep runs, which we did with self's players--but we couldn't sustain the success, which many feel would have been sustained under self.

i wish he would have been the one, i really do. but some people didn't want to accept the simple fact that KU is way out of our league in terms of tradition and brand. also, they have those dump trucks and they aren't afraid to use them.

i'm one of the people that felt that had KU beaten syracuse, williams would have stayed at KU and self would have stayed at UI. however, deluding ourselves into thinking that self wouldn't have taken the job at OSU is unhealthy thinking. hell, UNC may have gone after self if williams had turned them down--and they would have had him at hello.

Why does Self hate Weber?

weber went all spazzy when he came in (bill self is not walking through that door) and dee and deron threatened transfer. it may have been the right thing to do at the time, but self probably didn't appreciate it.

He did the interview too where he said he was 2-0 against Self. Even though they were 1-1 at that point. Weber kind of claimed he outcoached Bill, that and the funeral.

If Self hates Weber (and I doubt the feelings are that strong; he probably just thinks he's sort of a putz), I don't think it has much to do with the funeral.

I think it had more to do with Weber saying he's whipped Self's butt in the two meetings. Weber also accused Self of not coaching the Illini up (the famous "You can't even do a left-handed layup" line to Dee), and he said Self was more interested in being the players' buddy than their coach.

Personally, I never saw the big deal with the funeral gambit. Why should Self be offended by that? But the other stuff was a direct insult to Self as a coach, and I'm sure he wasn't too fond of that.

I think Nick Smith actually said the buddy thing.

I'll give both coaches credit for the way they spoke of each other in interviews prior to the game. Self talked about how he had a good thing going at Illinois and Weber took that to the next level with the title appearance. Weber talked about how Self set him up nicely upon his arrival.

both guys stepped into a pretty large shadow in their respective jobs. it's hard to believe that couldn't identify with one another just a little bit.

Self was still trying to recruit the Chicago area. He wasn't gonna say anything too good about Illinois. And it worked. He got Wright and Collins.

Well that's because Bruce is racist

I love that someone was telling the CPL coaches that, and they were buying it. Yep old Racey McRacist the guy who Deron Willimas brought to the NBA Draft with him.

This is a bit off topic, at least vis-a-vis the coaching searches, but I have to admit I'm really intrigued to see how next year plays out for the Illini. They're the one team in the Big Ten that I think is almost completely unpredictible with possible results all over the map. They have a real nice amount of talent on the roster. I could also see them actually being better without the senior class. In fact, depending on NBA early departures, it would not stun me if they won the league. On the other hand, a lot of their talent is a bit unproven or, in some cases, arguably took a step backwards. Also, probably the most talented player (Richmond) is, um, I don't know, crazy? Perhaps with added pressure on Weber, they implode. That also wouldn't really stun me. Who knows. Should be interesting.

Billy Gillespie apparently is going to hire Tom Coverdale to be an assistant coach for him at Texas Tech. Good, sound hire. Tom knows how to drink so he is the perfect compliment to Billy Clyde. :good:

On the bright side they won't have an A.M. practices. Should be easy to sell that to recruits.
