I just didn't think they would have to go nearly equal in pay. He's from Indiana, was a captain at Purdue, got the opportunity to go big-time from them and has spent 7-8 years there. I assumed if he left it would be for a top-tier job.

If they're willing to make him one of the highest-paid coaches, that's as good a reason as any.

I can't think of anyone that wouldn't leave their job if they were being offered nearly double the salary at another job.

I don't know about that. I know several people who wouldn't take a job just because of higher pay. It's certainly an important consideration but hardly the only one.

For a public example, look at Brad Stevens. He quit his job to take a job that was probably less than 1/2 the salary he was making before.

I might have overstated it by saying I couldn't think of anyone, but it's certainly uncommon. I don't think I'm overstating it by saying most people would take the huge pay increase.

I read a comment that Robbie Hummel could transfer to Missouri and not sit out a year. Is this true?

He'd have to enroll in a graduate program at Mizzou that's not offered at Purdue..

Yeah, it's like the sum of all fears, Purdue style. But it's technically possible.

I would prefer not to have to sacrifice Hummel and Painter to freedabum.

The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few

That's a steep price to pay though. How about Kelsey Barlow and an assistant coach instead?

Purdue coach Matt Painter will meet with Mizzou soon to gauge the school's commitment to the basketball program, sources told the Post-Dispatch today.

A resolution to the Painter situation will likely be Wednesday. One source said it was better than a 50 percent chance that Painter would accept an offer.

No word yet on what number Hummel will wear.

Anyone read what was put on Yahoo sports yesterday by Brad Evans?

Host: Does Brad Stevens stay or does he leave?

Evans: I think he is going to stick around. Look it's going to take the perfect job in order to wrest away Brad Stevens away from Indianapolis. You know, one point I do want to bring up is this. An hour and a half west of Indianapolis is Champaign, IL. Lot of unrest there in CU right now with Bruce Weber. Obviously Weber's leash is still a little bit long [but] it's definitely tightened up. Let's say Stevens sticks around at Butler through next year, Weber has another lackluster season with marquee talent coming in, a top recruiting class. I wouldn't be at all surprised that could be ultimately the step that propels Brad Stevens to the high major stage and he travels west to Champaign, but only in those circumstances. I don't think the Tennessee job, the Providence job, or really any other job that is available I would see Brad Stevens leaving Butler for.

I don't think Stevens is a realistic option for Illinois. He's going to stay at Butler for at least another year and then we'll see what happens with Crean at IU.

So he's not a realistic option because Illinois can't make a case for being a better job than a terrible Indiana team?

That's pretty sad.

Painter couldn't get past the Sweet Sixteen (or even to the Sweet Sixteen this year) with some of the best talent in Purdue history. If you could promise me that we would keep our upcoming recruits (2013 especially) I would say let him walk. Sadly it doesn't work that way.

I think Mizzou is greatly overpaying because they're desperate and embarassed. I guess they have that luxury.

If Purdue comes out of this with a Danny Hope caliber coach I'm going to be livid. They're dropping $100M on Mackey renovations. If they (the administration) don't cough up some coin for someone legit (I would be fine getting Painter back) then they should all be fired.

I think you're really underselling Painter.

Yeah, Mizzou has to overpay if they're going after a BCS conference coach because they aren't a top tier job, but Painter is a really good coach. The only possible worry I can think of with him is that his recruiting trailed off a little after Martin left. It could be all reports with the same source, but it seems like Painter is looking because of how annoyed he is with Purdue's Athletic Dept. as much as the money.

TT, could you explain why you think this? I don't get it.
