Is it just me or is VCU not nearly the story that George Mason was?

not sure what you mean. Should be a bigger story. Everyone had ameltdown when they were even let in the tourney. ANd they played an extra game in the tourney. And they've beaten only major conference teams. And with the exception of FSU, they've kind of pounded them (I dont remember the score of the USC game.)

It's pretty crazy.

I think the reason why Mason was a bigger story was because they were the first mid-major team in an extremely long time to make the Final Four. The landscape of college basketball was also much better as they beat MSU, UNC and UConn on the way to the Final Four. I remember being completely shocked that they beat UConn to advance to the FF. I was obviously surprised that VCU won today, but nowhere near the same level as when Mason did it a few years ago.

What was shocking to me about that George Mason/UConn game was that Mason was down almost the entire game. They needed a late second half run to gain the lead, only to lose the lead on a backbreaking buzzer beating layup, then played an almost perfect OT to win the game.

Brad Stevens and Shaka Smart have got to be the two hottest coaching prospects in college basketball right now, right? Who is 1A and who is 1B?

Really?

I can't tell if this is good or bad for college basketball. I guess the whole sport is kinda not really sure where to go now.

I'm not going to say it was 'easy' to tell that something insane like this years tournament was going to happen, but anyone with an eye on college basketball knew that the field was so very weak this year, and it as certainly possible that a lot of upsets were going to go down in the tournament. As nice as it is to have all these upsets and the insane craziness of it all, it feels like we need those constant faces, the powerhouses, to stay around for the sport to remain relevant. People just don't want to watch VCU - Butler match ups. And while its satisfying to see these big time programs get what they deserve, the more and more they deteriorate the more ignored college basketball will be.

I would like to see Jay Bilas's take on the VCU final four appearance. Maybe he and Vitale can also show us their final four projections again while they are at it.

I bet your bracket is spot on.

It's cyclical, dude. This happened 5 years ago w/ GM and no 1s in the tourney. 2 years ago, all freakin 1s in the FF.

It's not good for college bball. It's [expletive] great for it. There is no chance for a VCU-like run to the title in any other major sport. It not only forces further reconsideration of the BCS, it serves as validation for the NCAA that they're doing it right in at least one of their major sports.

I can't think of one person I know that isn't stoked about VCU playing Butler. When all the top seeds make the Final Four it is boring. I barely feel like watching unless there is at least one underdog team involved. It used to be the underdog teams would have their day on Thursday/Friday then quickly be gone. Some of them would sneak into the Sweet 16 but seldom had any prayer to advance further. I think it enhances the entire tournament that the mid-major teams are proving themselves capable of being more than just a footnote via a 1st round upset. By your reasoning I guess Butler vs Duke was bad for college basketball last season right? Wrong. I was at that game and it was a fantastic, exciting atmosphere. And it was a great game too. I know, I know, the game was played in Indy but still I can't imagine anyone who watched that game at home came away feeling like college basketball had been harmed by that game taking place. It was a great, competitive championship game.

That might be because George Mason had the Cinderella storyline all to itself, whereas VCU has to share it with Butler.

Man, I really wish Butler and VCU were on opposite sides of the bracket so they could both have a shot at the Championship game.
On the other hand, with the matchups as they are it guarantees that there will be a Cinderella team in the championship game.

Roy probably should have called for a timeout after Liggins' shot to have the refs review it. He has four timeouts left so he can afford to burn one.

It ended up being a three but if it had been changed to a two, it would have altered Carolina's strategy.

I don't know how much I wanted him, but he was a decent enough "safety" at least. We'll know about Painter on Tuesday (which I mean, come on, we all know anyways). Shaka might be our best chance to get someone halfway decent.

he was my first choice. besides the fact that painter isnt coming here, you would think martin would wait if the purdue job was opening up. ugh, i have no clue who were gonna get now.

Yeah, I don't think Martin takes the UT job if Painter is leaving.

I wonder if this will help push the NCAA to the 128 team tournament. I mean if VCU was team number 68 this year, and one that was blasted as a team that had no business making it, then it was possible that a Final Four caliber team could have been left out of the field.

That would be such a disaster of epic proportions. It's fine the way it is.

I can't believe I'm still reading stories about this Painter to Missouri nonsense. Just give him that extension/raise and end the whole charade already.

Georgia Tech still hasn't hired Paul Hewitt's replacement. NC State is also looking for a coach. I think that both jobs are better fits for Smart given his history.
