Could IU realistically be 5th in the conference?

Purdue, Michigan St, Illinois, Ohio St. are going to be at the top.

Michigan lost its top 2 scorers. Wisconsin lost a lot, but can't doubt their coaching. Minnesota brings some guys back, but they aren't great. Northwestern is OK. Iowa and Penn St aren't going to be factors.

I think Minnesota is still clearly superior to IU. Iowa and PSU are horrible, but it's hard for me to take Wisconsin lightly based on their recent history. I admit I don't really know anything about what they have coming in.

I don't see IU finishing above 7th, even with vast improvement.

Creek looked like he could be a star last year when he played. And I have hope that Watford will take a huge step forward. Get some improvement from guys like Elston, Hulls, and get a freshman to step up and this team could be very interesting.

Not really.

I think IU is a clear eighth-best at this point, which is promising progress. Any higher than that would be really, really difficult.

At this point I just want to finish .500 overall and wherever that puts us in the Big Ten standings, so be it. NIT OR BUST! :stickman:

6-12 (+ a BTT win)might get it done. The bad teams in their nonconference are REALLY bad.

Creek also was on the team when they lost to Boston, George Mason, and Loyola (MD) and is coming back from injury. It's asking a lot for the team to take that kind step forward just based on improvement, and a guy with 12 games collegiate experience returning from injury. The way I understand it, none of the freshmen for Indiana are ready to make any sort of immediate impact.

Yeah, the non-conference should allow IU to be .500 if they win the games they should.

That's true -- at least in a vacuum. None of the three players would be considered immediate impact types, by any definition of the word. However, Oladipo and Sheehey will, ostensibly, be replacing minutes filled by the likes of Brett Finkelmeier. On a vintage Indiana team, or on a team like Illinois, their impact would likely be minimal. But having an actual scholarship division-one athlete should be a marked improvement for Indiana at this point in time.

I think that was more an issue 2 years ago than last year, though Crean's Daniel Moore blind spot still did rear its head on occassion.

I think Crean has to bite the bullet and run Hulls out there as the PG every night. There's no sense in wasting any more time with Rivers, and Jones is a lot more valuable off the ball. Is Watford going to stay at the 4, I seem to remember it being rumored he'd switch to the 3 this year, but I just don't see how that's reasonable with the current frontcourt.

IU's problems this year are the same they've been the past 2: Lack of quality depth, and lack of frontcourt skill. Each year there's been improvements in those spots, but IU picked a really bad time to rebuild from scratch. The first 4 years for Crean looks like it will be the best 4 year run for the Big Ten since the 90s.

How long is Crean's leash at Indiana? Alford has to be salivating at the idea that Indiana is sooner or later going to kick him to the curb for him.

LOOOOOOOONG.

And with the recruiting inroads he's making in Indiana, it shouldn't be an issue for quite some time.

there's a mystery out-of-state big time recruit coming to MM in champaign and everyone is speculating that it's quincy miller.

boner city.

yeah, if true. i just get the feeling that miller is one of those soulless mercenaries, hand out to the highest bidder, that illinois doesn't get because they don't pay.

EDIT: not true. q miller is taking his expensive talents to durham for MM.

For whatever reason, it seems (in Crean's mind anyway) that Jones has been more effective as a PG, while Hulls has actually probably been better off the ball. I think that's how they'll try to run out there (whenever they are on the court together). Sounds like they are set on playing Jones at PG often. The turnovers obviously become a big concern there. I do think (hope) we won't see much of Rivers on the floor this year. I think between Hulls/Jones/Creek they can have a PG on the floor at all times without relying on Rivers.

They have talked quite a bit from what I've seen about Watson playing the 3. Not exactly sure how that's going to work out though, basically because of the current front-court (as you said). They definitely like him more in that role and he played well there late last season. I imagine they think they can run Elston out there at PF with Michel at C, but I find that to be pretty suspect.

And agreed with the notion that Crean has a pretty long leash. He's starting to get some top in-state talent (down the road, at least) which buys him tons of leeway with people here. If he gets Zeller (unlikely), people here are going to flip.
