One thing is for sure: If Albert drops off this season like he did in the last 6 or 7 weeks last year he won't be able to demand that monster contract. He had elbow surgery and is now having back trouble. He is 1 year older and who knows? He may bat .305 this year with only 25 HRs and become tradable.

It's not as absurd as it sounds. After all, they traded Hornsby and Medwick in their PRIME (both after winning triple crowns) and tried to ship Musial to the Pirates in HIS prime....stay tuned.

Pujols batted .329/.432/.591 over the last six weeks of the season.

What the [expletive] are you babbling about?

Pujols in Sept./Oct.: .357 .440 .616 1.056

Pujols in August: .319 .443 .649 1.092

If they ended up trading Pujols it's not going to be only for a vastly overrated and hugely flawed slugger whose contract is up at the same time.

Yep, he really stunk it up in August and September last year

August - .319 .443 .649 1.092

September - .357 .440 .616 1.056

I think your Medwick/Hornsby/Musial comparison is right on point though. What the team did 60-85 years ago is indicative of how they'll likely treat the Pujols situation.

When in doubt refer to the history books...

*Before game 6 of the 2003 NLCS*

MacPhail: So we are up 3-2 in this series and are one win away from the World Series. This is way too much pressure for me. What should we do?

Dusty: Lets consult the history books dude.

MacPhail: alright.....well it says here in the past when we've gotten there we've committed a horrible enbarrassing collapse. In keeping with the tradition of the team, I suggest we do just that. But we don't have any black cats and the Mets aren't available. And Boston already ripped off the "ground ball through legs" thing that most everyone probably won't even remember that we did that once before. Hmm...

Hendry: I got it! Andy do you remember that special needs kid with the glasses and the headphones around his ears? Call up the make a wish foundation and get that kid in a seat down the left field line. This is gonna be an epic reminder of our teams glorious history!

pujols for howard, jayson werth and domonic brown. fair?

I wouldn't do it

i probably wouldn't either, but it's about the best deal i could come up with for the cardinals that the phillies might actually do also. there's no way they'd throw in utley, and werth is better than victorino and can play corner OF.

how about pujols and brendan ryan for howard, rollins and brown? rollins offers a very clear upgrade over ryan at SS and brown becomes the heir apparent to the RF job after ludwick becomes too old/expensive.

Rollins - 4.8 WAR average the last 4 years

Howard - 4.9 WAR average the last 4 years

Brown - borderline top 10 prospect in all of baseball

Pujols - 8.25 WAR average the last 4 years

Ryan - projected WAR around 2.5

I haven't checked to be sure, but Utley has probably been MLB's 2nd most valuable position player over the last 5 years. And his contract is ridiculously good for the Phillies. We're never going to trade Pujols, but if we were to engage in talks with Philly, the conversation starts and ends with Utley+.

I would think Utley and Hamels would be a good start for Philly.

In other words, it makes no sense and it's not going to happen.

Yep. Utley/Hamel is not worth it from a Phillies standpoint.

Cause the Cardinals organization in the 1940s is so much similar to the Cardinals organization today.

that had better be an end for philly because they're already losing that trade.

The only team that is said to not be interested in Pujols is the Chicago Cubs, who one insider said is already too right handed to look into acquiring Cardinals slugger.

Well at least they took the trouble of asking Hendry himself.

It's still amazing that two guys talking out of their a** is a news-worthy, bottom ticker line and on-air reportable item. What next?

Um, he's sick. My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Ferris pass out at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it's pretty serious.

As others have stated, Utley+Hamels would be too much. I was thinking Utley+prospect. But Philly would need to get rid of Howard. As a Cards fan, I wouldn't trade Pujols for Howard+Hamels. Utley would have to be part of any deal, and that will never happen.

I dunno. I was bored on the El during the ride home from work yesterday.

I can't wait for when the Cardinals loose Pujols and he ends up in New York or Boston. Can you imagine the excessive level of coverage will be like?

I wish our players had that kind of drop off in the last two months of the season.

There is a reason that the stats for his August posted here did NOT include HRs, RBI and RISP. Go look that up! The man had 40 HRs in July and ended with 49. You like 9 HRs in 2 and a 1/2 months from your franchise multi gazillion $ slugger? He hit worse after he got his "protection" from Holiday.

If you could have watched him on FSMW every day like I could, you would have seen him diving at balls in the dirt a foot outside and uncharacteristicly looking at strikes down the middle.

I don't pretend to know what the problem was but Cardinal fans everywhere were scratching their heads. I think that the light was somewhat diverted away from him as the WHOLE TEAM stopped hitting with RISP....I believe the Cards were the worst in the league in that regard. Many blamed McCrea as the culprit and that a whole new hitting approach was needed.

I don't know if that was true or not, but I would think that the subtraction of Duncan, Thurston and the hapless Ankiel from the roster would help enough! (Ankiel acually set a new mark for futility as he was 1 for 15 with the bases loaded)

I guess the team BA will go up, minus them and plus Lopez, and McGwire will be hailed as the hero througout the land. Who knows? The Mo.Highway Dept. may reenstate his name to the stretch of Highway 70 called Mark McGuire HW that they are voting to remove right now.
