Back on topic, I hope Texas comes out firing this year after the choke job they gave in the National Championship. Not to mention the bad current streak the school has in finishing as the runner up.

They should do well. Jungmann and Ruffin are both pretty badass pitchers.

Pitching I am pretty confident in. I want to see Kevin Keyes grow as a player, seems to have a little bit of an attitude. I like Cameron Rupp a lot too.

He's already pretty damn good. I don't know anything about his attitude though.

I could be way off base, but seems to have some of that Delmon Young mentality. He's a very fiery player.

that's not always a bad thing of course.

Not at all, just seems to teeter on the edge of looking like he could snap at any moment.

What would I have had to post about? Illinois' stellar college baseball teams? Just because I don't have a horse in the discussion doesn't mean I can't read it. Or that it doesn't belong in a forum devoted to that discussion.

I do wish college baseball would be followed more, much of that is due to lack of exposure and money poured into programs, but obviously I'm biased towards baseball as it is my fav. collegiate sport. With that said, I follow baseball more regionally than nationally.

Northwestern will have 2 pitchers to watch (Jokisch being a solid lefty who'll throw on Fridays), Illinois won't be as good good as they were without Wikoff, Bonnadonna, etc. UIC will be solid as usual, EIU should be the best of the bunch with Mueller and Recchia. NIU and SIU won't be as good as previous years. The JUCOs from Central IL on South should be good with Heartland, Parkland, Wabash Valley and John Logan being the ones to watch.

Ole Miss, I'm rooting for Barrett to pitch up to his potential for the Rebels.

Yea, it is a MUST that he does. After Pomeranz the Rebels staff is just completely up in the air this year.

Yeah, if it was on TV more often, I'd watch more UT baseball. But it's not, so I watch something else.

I'm all for the thread being in this forum, for what it's worth. It'd be an interesting read and I forget about the Amateur Baseball forum all the time.

The thread belongs in Amateur baseball. But to help get it hits, I put a link to the thread in other sports.

If that doesn't seem like a good solution, feel free to take it up with my boss. :D

All the views were watching you talk about how important the college baseball (and by extension your miserable career) thread were.

If history is any indicator, this should be a great year for Texas. Tons of pitching depth on that team and the offense isn't too bad either. Defense is a question mark IMO. As far as local teams are concerned, Creighton and Bradley (*cough*cough*clears throat) should be tough. Bradley had a good recruiting class (considering they're in the MVC) but they're young.

I don't care where this thread is placed. I read every comment but don't post much anymore. I love college baseball and watch games when I can and this thread is a good place to talk about the top teams year-after-year. I understand that it's isn't everyone favorite topic though. I enjoy it.

Bradley finally got rid of (he retired) Dewey Kalmer, which helped.

I loved Dewey, he's a great guy and they had a very good staff with Wagner and former Pirate Mike Dunne.

Now, they basically got EKU's coaching staff with Elvis running the show, who's a great guy and should do well.

As far as their team, Cooper will be one to watch coming from DMACC as he's prob. the best player in the state, Martin can swing it, and while Altbach can touch 91, hasn't developed the control or second pitch to translate it into production as their Sat. starter.

Isn't that mostly a product of timing/location?

Not really although timing plays a role, baseball just isn't a money sport for the NCAA & isn't a game setup well for national audiences. Even if ESPN dedicated themselves to promoting a primetime Texas/LSU baseball game, that would likely be a non-conference mid-week matchup (unless played before conference begins) not featuring Friday starters (of course, Friday night games arent going to have huge ratings either way). You need the elite guys like Prior/Strasburg on top programs facing each other and buzz generated. Of course, ESPN could do more to promote college baseball but if there isn't a buzz pushing them towards it, why should they?

I think location/timing plays a huge role. The Big Ten is the most profitable conference for basketball/football, has almost exclusively huge schools with huge alumni bases, and nobody from those schools gives a [expletive] about college baseball. So much of the US population is built up in areas where college baseball is a non-entity due to weather. People will casually watch the CWS, but I'm not going to become a big LSU or Texas fan just because they're on TV. Without a rooting interest, there's little reason to follow for most people.

If it's mainly about the chances of winning, realistically every year one or two schools from every major conference has a legit chance of winning conference let alone a national title, regardless of sport. Should I have a rooting interest in UK Football knowing they're going to be 6-6/7-5 every year or you as far as Illini football? Look at Oregon St. as Corvallis isn't one of the better climates and yet they win titles and recruit well every year. Even in college football, the majority of the national title games consist of Southern teams so I'm not as big of a believer as far as weather. I admit it matters as far as attendence as not many are going to sit in Evanston on a Fri. afternoon in April in 30 degree weather, but gate revenue in college baseball matters very little even with the elite programs compared to potential TV revenue, if the market demanded it.

Fandom, at least among alumni, is built from going to the games, being a part of the atmosphere while you're there. Having nobody go to the actual games makes a pretty big difference IMO. Football's an event sport, people only have to pay attention 12 Saturdays a year while they're hungover on the couch or getting drunk in a parking lot.

Regarding Oregon St., they're in a unique situation having a program that plays the majority of their away games vs. California and Arizona schools doesn't hurt.

I'd have to think the in-depth minor league system of MLB hurts quite a bit as well. A non-alum isn't going to bother paying attention to a sporting event full of guys that don't stand a chance at making the pros. College basketball and college football are the highest (US) levels of the sport after the pros. College baseball is nowhere close.

This I agree with, although I'm not one to share this view as I prefer collegiate football, basketball, and baseball to the pros of each sport. There isn't that attachment as far as being able to see them the following year in the pros for 99.9% of those drafted and 1500 being drafted w/many simply drafted to fill minor league rosters is quite different than football/basketball drafts.
