There's nowhere for him to play. If he wants a minor league contract, sure. But he shouldn't be on this team.

Yeah i agree... Give him a minor league deal with an invite to ST... If he doesn't make the team, either release him or see if he's willing to play AAA to see if his hitting stroke comes back... He could make it as a 5th OF instead of Fuld though if Fuld were to make it on the bench. If it came to that, who would you rather have? Fuld or Byrnes (considering the $ between the 2 is minimal)???

Heck... I wouldn't mind him (or anyone really) getting a minor league deal... the more people trying out for the team the better IMO. basically the more the merrier you know? It gives the Cubs some competitions and options as well. I'm a big fan of "lets just throw everything at the wall and see what sticks" deal.... It can't hurt anyway...

He's going to get paid the minimum anyway, since Arizona DFA'd him, they're responsible for paying off his actual contract. But, there isn't a spot for him on this club. Is he potentially better than Fuld as a 5th OFer? Statistically speaking, I don't see it. Not to mention the fact that I'm not even sure Fuld has a spot on the opening day roster as it is. Assuming we go with 12 pitchers, our backups are going to be Hill, one of Fontenot or Baker, Blanco, Nady, and one of either Fuld or Tracy, if there are no injuries coming out of spring training. At least that's what I'm figuring anyway......

Everyone wants to be a Chicago Cub. Unofrtunately for him, were not the Boston Red Sox who can find a way to sign every available free agent even if they have nowhere to play. Besides, even if we did somehow open up a magical 6th outfield spot, Id rather bring back Reed Johnson.

Wtih guys like Byrnes, Nelson and Gomes coming out saying "they wanted to be Cubs", I wonder if this means that the all of the small market teams are out of money this offseason. I wouldn't mind Nelson or Byrnes but only on a minor league deal with an invite to Spring Training, nothing guarantee.

I want Byrnes to be a Cub.

Why?

probably because he's a cardinals fan...that may have something to do with it.

For those who don't know, the DBacks fans are estatic he won't be back. What Juan Pierre was to the 4-3 groundout for the Cubs, Byrnes was to the Dbacks with popups.

If he were to accept a minor league deal, I wouldn't mind giving him an opportunity to win a spot as the 5th OFer/AAA filler

Byrnes is going to make the league minimum. He's already getting paid by the D-Backs for his actual contract. This would be just like the Cubs signing of Edmonds, other than the fact that Byrnes is very likely to suck.

Honestly I would take Byrnes over Fuld, but I'm way more down on Fuld than other people on this board I think.

Fuld isn't a star, but Byrnes has really been bad the last few years. Fuld would be hard pressed to not top Byrnes' .663 and .641 OPS' from the past two seasons. And that's without considering defense at all.

wouldn't it be better if there were a ________ wants to be a Cub thread where we could just insert mediocre player's names/news clippings?

Exactly. We could afford him even if he had nowhere to play. That said, he's an OF signing too late.
