SI.com's Jon Heyman tweets that the Cubs and Rays are looking at Chan Ho Park, who relieved for the Phillies last season.

Park put up a mediocre 4.43 ERA last season after a 3.40 mark in 2008, though his walks and strikeouts stayed fairly steady.

Park will be 37 in June, so he's certainly not worth a multi-year deal. But he's a fairly decent option in the middle of the game, and should provide bullpen depth for some team.

SWEET JESUS CUBS FRONT OFFICE. Is it really this hard to go after talent these days? Christ. Fire Hendry.

I love posters who overreact to some rumor. We should have fired Hendry when he signed Ankiel, Posednick, Contreras, etc. As I 've posted before, Hendry gets bashed whether he makes a move or not.

Wasn't Park pretty effective as a reliever? I don't have a problem with Hendry looking into Park if it is only as a bullpen arm.

It's not a matter of whether he gets the deal done. The idea that these are the players he deems worthy of pursuing is very troubling.

Though even that would be too presumptive, perhaps. First of all, the rumor may be somewhat (if not entirely) fabricated by some writer assumes the Cubs could be interested. Secondly, it's like reading too much into the waiver wire in August -- "Who was put on waivers!?!" -- many players are, and little is actually intended by the GM's action. Likewise, Hendry probably "shows interest" in a great number of free agents he has very little interest in actually signing. You need to feel out the market and inquire on demands. Plus the rumor was from just one guy . . . on Twitter . . . maybe I should have started and stopped with that one.

Yeah, from 2007-2009 Park's line as a reliever is:

120.1 IP, 118 H's, 44 BB's, 101 K's, 10 HR's, and a 3.29 ERA.

I wonder if the Cubs are looking at backup plans for my guy Calero because he's seeking a multi-year deal or his price tag is too high. If that's the case, I've got no problems with moving on to plan B. Park is fine if you get him on a cheap, one year deal.

Plus, while certainly not the prime consideration, given the significance of our recruiting efforts in Korea the past couple years, it wouldn't hurt to have a high-profile player (from their perspective) on the major league club.

I was just ready to post basically the same thing you posted. Hendry contacts dozens of agents to get a feel as to whether their client can help the team and fit into the budget. As for these sports writers, most of them just make up everything based on who's available and what a team needs. Go back and look at the predictions as to where FAs would sign and check their accuracy (or lack thereof). Most of the speculation on NSBB is just as accurate as the "experts".

The initial report that said Hendry was after Calero also said that Hendry wanted him on a one-year deal while Calero wanted multi years. There probably is something to what you're saying.

And as a bullpen arm, Park's been decent. If he came cheap (1-year deal), I wouldn't be opposed. Though I also would be more than fine with going with out current bullpen.

I'd have checked in on all three of those guys to see what their asking prices were.

Dear Mr. Contreras, are you willing to pay us under the table to help recoup some of the league minimum we're paying you?

In his particular case, I would have been looking for the words "minor league deal" in his asking price.

Here is a quote from Bruce Miles on the subject. It is a response to a reader's comment.

The interest in Chan Ho Park has been overstated. It's most likely the agent trying to drive up the price.

Jon Heyman just said the Cubs are the favorites for Park on the MLB Network.

Let's hope that he comes very cheap.

With the amount of FA pitchers still on the market, and no teams rushing to sign anyone, if Park doesn't come cheap Hendry is just being [expletive] stupid. I'd rather we sign 2-3 guys to MiLB deals with ST invites and see if someone pans out than pay Park much more than $1m guaranteed.
