I hid it from everybody.

Really?

In an interview with ESPN's "Baseball Tonight", La Russa said he didn't know McGwire had used steroids until the slugger had admitted using performance-enhancing drugs in the phone call to the manager earlier Monday.

REALLY?

I wish I had never done steroids even though doing so helped to make me untold millions of dollars and brought me fortune and fame. So kids, don't do drugs!

I'm a good person. Am I good person? I am a good person.

He hit 49 HR's as a rookie and would have likely still made plenty had he never touched them. He did make more by taking them but he would have still made plenty without them. That said I agree when people like this admit they need to stress the kids more so they understand that it wasn't worth it in the end.

Anyways my first reaction was regret that the crazy youtube Cards fan was retired. This video would have been epic.

What makes you think his 49 HR's were clean? Pujols will be the next big name when he's caught.

Because if he's admitting it all why not admit that too. He said it started in 1989. Probably started then because he was sucking that year.

As far as Pujols goes the thread mine as ... I mean might as well be locked now because it has gone down the inevitable road to pointlessness.

I have no idea how Cubbiebum could read my post and get out of it what he did.

Who gives a crap about his first year? And the fact that a person who used PEDs and made millions upon millions form it and now comes out and says he's sorry strikes me as disingenuous at best. The part about telling kids not to them, if he said that, makes him a hypocrite.

Heard a quote from LaRussa on the radio and he he "respected McGuire even more now". What a tool! :banghead:

Even more now than when he cried like a baby in front of Congress?

I am sure all the Who's down then in Hooterville will continue to defend him like the blind sheep they are. Their argument will just change from "he's never flunked a drug test" to "big deal, everyone was doing it."

Oh good, steroid news.

Since we’re all in the mood for looking back, let’s consider this, Mark: You were the steroid era.

Still are. You and every guy who made the same terrible, weak decisions, over and over. We’ve become so comfortable blaming Bud Selig and Don Fehr, we forget the real villains in this. They’re McGwire, Canseco, A-Rod, Palmeiro, Bonds, every man in the Mitchell Report, every player who put a needle in his body and made the next player choose between that and pumping gas for a living, everyone too cowardly to compete straight up.

The steroid era isn’t a seized batch of urine samples, or Victor Conte vs. the feds, or Selig vs. his own eyes. It’s McGwire living the lie, and the hundreds of others just like him – their angry denials as fraudulent as their careers.

“No one on the teams I managed worked harder or better than Mark,” La Russa said in a statement put out by the Cardinals. “And now, his willingness to admit mistakes, express his regret, and explain the circumstances that led him to use steroids add to my respect for him. I’ve defended Mark because I observed him develop his unique power-hitting skill through a rigorous physical and fundamental workout program.”

That and the 10 or 12 years of Winstrol, Deca and HGH.

Costas has been broadcasting a live interview from McGwire's house for the last half hour. Very interesting, and a coup for MLB Network.

so he's saying that he used roids, but NOT to help his performance.

i'm so [expletive] sick of these half apologies. i'd rather a guy just not say anything then half ass it and make excuses.

He's an admitted user. That's it. Done. Whatever rationalization he wants to employ to sleep better at night is fine. Nobody's going to actually buy into such nonsense. He can say it -- it just doesn't mean anything.

I'm down in Hooterville right now and it's not a praisefest. The local alt-rock radio station morning DJs were ripping into McGwire pretty hard. They replayed the Costas MLB interview with sappy music and made snarky comments. Even most of the callers were between "meh" to irritated.

But I will give the Cardinals one thing: this was run about 100% better than A Roid's admission last season: carefully structured and perfectly timed. Tiger Woods' people should be calling whatever PR firm handled this right away.

In other breaking news, Tiger Woods is addicted to whores.

Hey that isn't funny it is an ADDICTION!!! Oprah had a special on it so it must be serious, he just couldn't help himself, so please don't equate those money hungry MLbers to Tiger.

thank goodness Sammy never did steriod and he will now be credited for breaking Maris's record.

That's where I kind of buy it.

I was an Resident Assistant in college and because I was in the newest dorm I had a lot of the athletes.

I had a number of instances of student-athletes 'roid raging and after talking with them I'm say the split was about pretty even. Some were flat-out using to help performance but others were trying to recover. And some was a combination where they used steroids to recover but continued for the performance gain.

I hope that is sarcasm and that your cubbie blue blinders aren't on full. Just like he never used a corked bat: right?

eh, I'm pretty sure it's sarcasm. Are there actually Cubs fans out there that GENUINELY believe that Slammy didn't juice?

Misquoted. Hardcorecubfan said that.

I honestly don't think there is a single Cubs fan out there who doesn't think Sosa didn't juice.

Since he tested positive in 03 it's really not a matter of opinion anymore.

That and saying he had to do steroids because that was the 'era' is going to piss off the HOF voters still. If he came out to try to save his HOF chances, it might just add fuel to the fire.
