Tennessee could turn this screw one more time by hiring Sarkisian and Holt away from UDub.

Time for the Nick Saban Tour de SEC to continue I say.

I'm wondering if Tubberville is seconding guessing about settling for TT when Tennessee was going to open.

I would LOVE to see the Lubbock meltdown if Tubs managed to sneak away to Knoxville.

This really sucks. I mean, really sucks. There's not a worse time for a coach to bolt and, like VolCub said, this probably means many, many commits are heading elsewhere. The only hope on that end is that it's so close to signing day and so many schools are already loaded down with prospects.

As for Kiffin's replacement, I want Mike Leach. It won't happen, but he's the best coach available and it's not particularly close. Tuberville would've been really nice as well, but he was hired a week too early. As for realistic possibilities, Mike Hamilton really liked Air Force's Troy Calhoun last year and it's being reported that Tennessee has contacted Jon Gruden. I want Leach more than either, but would be fine with them.

I'm not that surprised that the Kiffins are leaving, I figured they would the first chance they got at being hired at USC. I'm more surprised that USC had to go all the way down the list to Lane. By my count, he was probably their 7th or 8th choice. It's a crappy move, but USC is a better job than UT and he has ties there. It's not a surprise.

the mods on the UT Rivals board are saying that UT will make an offer to Muschamp

He'd be a solid choice and it's being reported that they're interested. Not as good as Leach, but solid.

USC has hired Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin, sources say

man that is a huge kick in the balls for tennessee. they look like they were really building toward something and now they lose their coach and who knows, maybe some assistants too? ouch.

Yeah, and talk about bridge-burning. Knoxville faithful have to be furious with him.

Local news is reporting angry mobs of UT students marching around campus. May be exaggeration, but pretty close to everyone is pissed about this.

Leach would have been my first two for Tennessee, but if the OMC is right then if Tennessee can somehow lure Muschamp to Tennessee from Texas, then I would considered that a huge get.

Crap I hope not, though its just a matter of time. Not completely sold on him as a head coach either though, although for the same reasons Carroll was successful at USC. Its one of those styles that could go either way.

Why isn't Leach a realistic target?

Because he's quirky and has controversy around him. Enough people here were pissed at some of the things Lane did that I think Hamilton would be way too cautious about bringing in another "controversial" hire. Leach would come if Tennessee was interested, I just don't think UT will show enough interest.

I can't express how much I hope I'm wrong, though.

Yeah, him not being a head coach before is bothersome, but he's been very solid everywhere he's been and I haven't heard any negative comments about him. Outside of Leach, he'd be there with Calhoun and maybe Gruden at the top of my list.

I would love to see Leach in the SEC just to see how it worked out.

Muschamp makes 900k at Texas. Kiffin's contract had him averaging about 2.35 million. If I was Muschamp I'd bolt for that.

The ceiling for the head coach at UT is much higher than what Lane was making, but the assistants were getting paid more than most. Either way, Muschamp would make significantly more than he does now.

I think he'd work very well. His spread offense would be questioned just like Meyer's spread option was, but I don't doubt that it'd work.

That said, Calhoun runs the triple option I believe. That'd be fascinating as well. I wonder if we could get Paul Johnson?

Okay, after the initial fallout, here is where things stand.

There are unconfirmed reports that Muschamp WILL BE hired and announced tomorrow. From what I can gather, Kiffin left enough staff in Knoxville that a Top 20 class is still possible, though that Top 3 is gone. Directly from players... Orgeron stood in the meeting and told every early enrollee (who don't start classes until tomorrow) that they all have a scholarship offer at USC and that they should join Lane, Monte, and him there.

On offense, as of right now, Kippy Brown stays (WR), as does James Cregg (OL). Jim Chaney (OC) is up in the air, as he's interested in getting back into the NFL. David Reaves (QB) is Kiffin's brother in law, so it remains to be seen what will happen here. I cannot imagine how he stays. So, Muschamp (if he's indeed the guy) needs a QB coach and a RB coach.

On defense, it looks like (as of right now) LB coach Lance Thompson is staying, as is DB coach Willie Mack garza. A DL coach and DC are needed immediately, and I'm hearing Rodney Garner (UGA DL Coach and Recruiting Coordinator and former Vol Coach) could be announced fairly quickly, though that is apparently just a rumor right now. On DC, it's anybody's guess, but you have to think that Muschamp will call his own defenses.

It may not be the death knell that so many thought it would be, but this one will hurt, and pushes back the rebuilding by at least a year, and more likely two or three. SouthsideRyan is thrilled, I am sure.

Just so people here know, there are reports of "mob style" riots going on at the campus in Knoxville. Tear gas has been thrown, Lane's car was chased. Crazy tonight in Knxoville.

Living in Atlanta and hearing about Paul Johnson this year, he really seems to be different. I don't think he wants to go anywhere and I actually believe him. But money talks.

Must of found out all the Tennessee recruits Lane is bringing with him to USC.

Like I said, Muschamp would be a solid hire. About the best we could expect (outside of Leach). I figured the assistants would fall that way, but I'm glad to hear that apparently Thompson is staying. Garner would be a fantastic hire if that's accurate.

Yeah, he'd be a longshot, but I really think highly of Johnson's ability to coach.

Lots of talk on the Texas boards too, though I am guessing most everything they are saying is coming from the Tenn boards.

Espn guy mentioned Dave Cutcliff as a guy who would make sense too. All of this is happening so damn fast.

Totally agree. Fabulous coach who tells it like it is, but doesn't seem to alienate anyone in the process.
