There's mention of this in the bowl games thread, but I think this is stunning enough to warrant its own thread. Urban Meyer announced today that he is stepping down for health reasons. No specifics were given, but it was mentioned on the telecast of the Meineke Car Care Bowl (not in the article I linked to) that there is no immediate health concern. So my interpretation is that he's been warned that something may happen in the future if he doesn't make changes. He will coach Florida in the Sugar Bowl.

Shocking news. I hope he's okay. That said, I hope Florida hires a coach that doesn't work out and they spend years being crappy. [expletive] Florida.

He's had the brain cyst since his assistant days at Notre Dame. I think it's ESPN that is reporting that he has a heart muscle defect and has been to the hospital multiple times with chest pains since the SEC Championship game.

I bet my Mississippi State friends are squirming right now. Just saw Mullen's name mentioned on ESPN.

I'd say Mullen, Stoops, Petrino and Saban would be on Florida's short list. It'd likely take $6+ million to pull Saban away from Bama, so I doubt that one. Stoops may well take the job and I think Mullen or Petrino definitely would.

It'd be interesting to see Phil Fulmer take the job.

Chris Peterson?

I keep hearing he has no interest whatsoever in leaving Boise. He's rumored for just about every major job nonetheless, though.

Not sure I can blame him. It is a sweet gig up there for him.

Yeah, he apparently loves it there, plus it's almost an easy conference championship every year. Plus that blue field is awesome.

So he takes a year off to recover his heath. Zook gets one more year to prove himself a failure. Illinois hires Meyer after next season.

Hey, it could happen.

He doesn't get paid too much, but he has about the most job security of any coach in the country I would think.

Bob Stoops is an obvious fit - he was D-coordinator at UF before coaching Oklahoma, and he flirted with ND so he's clearly open to leaving. And UF is probably a better job.
