Is it me or has Altanta traded for a half dozen mediocre outfielders the past couple years?

I hope this isn't a case of them acquiring Melky to spin him off to the Cubs.

Not sure why they would spin him off to the cubs, dont know if there is anything the cubs have that the braves need. To me, the braves received a really crappy package for Vazquez. Vazquez was pretty much one of the top pitchers in the NL last year and in the Majors. I mean come on, cabrera, Dunn and a prospect for Vazquez and Logan? The Braves i would imagine could've done better than that. Looking at it and not considering the money, the yankees got much better while the braves got worse.

Maybe they're hoping that Jordan Schafer takes over in CF, Melky is anti-awful insurance, and they trade us Nate McLouth.

Yankees having an excellent off-season and they really haven't given up much.

Their timing is impeccable. Build a new stadium, pare down the payroll with the spare parts that aren't performing and start the semi-rebuilding process right when the economy is in the toilet and every other team is looking to lower their payrolls.

I haven't been impressed with Cashman as a whole, but it looks like he's learned a few new tricks of late.

Not considering the money misses the point entirely, though.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post has confirmed that the Yankees have acquired Javier Vazquez and LHP Boone Logan from the Braves for outfielder Melky Cabrera, LHP Mike Dunn and RHP Arodys Vizcaino.

The deal is basically complete, and only pending physicals from all five players involved. Vizcaino, 19, manged a 2.13 ERA in 10 starts (42 1/3 innings) at the Single-A level this year and boasts major upside. Dunn is also a quality young hurler and Cabrera fills a hole for Atlanta, but the Yankees just landed a top-line starter and now have the opportunity to significantly improve their club with a hard-hitting free agent outfielder like Matt Holliday or Jason Bay. It must be nice to have a limitless budget.

It was a decent trade for Atlanta. They had too many starters. The White Sox and Braves were unimpressed with Vazquez down the stretch. The Braves needed a LF too.

How were the Braves unimpressed? His September/October numbers this year were ridiculous... 2.28ERA 0.92WHIP 43IP 2CG 46:9 K:BB

I'm not saying Vasquez is a marquee pitcher, but this season gave the Braves ample opportunity to sell high. I refuse to believe that Melky Cabrera is the best player they could get in a Vasquez swap from anyone. Cabrera is a joke.

Agreed. I clearly remember Vazquez being one of the best pitchers in the 2nd half. He's a good pitcher and I would love to have him here. Too bad other teams are accepting the Yankees garbage for good quality players.

Solid trade for the Yanks. Way too many people overrate Cabrera.

This is a meh trade for both teams. The Braves sold high on a guy clearly coming off his best year, but they didn't really get anything that will help. The Yankees are getting a guy who clearly pitches better in the NL then the AL. So again, a "meh" trade for both teams.

But from the Yankees perspective, he's only going to be the No. 4 or 5 starter on their staff. So if his productions slips (which, yeah, it will) they also have Burnett, Sabathia, Petitte and Chamberlain/Hughes.

More like a steal from the Yanks.

Eh, they only get a year of Vazquez along with Boone Logan. The Braves get $12m in salary relief, a league average OF, a decent left-handed reliever, and a very intriguing prospect in Vizcaino. I think the Yankees won this trade, but not as much as people might think.

Now that they're set to acquire Javier Vazquez, the Yankees have a surplus of pitching. Joel Sherman of the New York Post says (via Twitter) that the Yanks will try to trade Chad Gaudin or Sergio Mitre before Spring Training ends to free up some money.

Both pitchers will become free agents after the season. Mitre earned $1.25MM last year, striking out 32 batters in 51.2 innings for a 6.79 ERA (5.40 FIP). Gaudin earned $2MM, striking out 139 in 147.1 innings and allowing just 146 hits for an ERA of 4.64 (4.16 FIP). Gaudin would figure to have some value on the trade market.

Looks like the Yanks are now looking to deal two former Cubs

I agree with what you're saying.

And now I'm definitely thinking the Cubs could have gotten Hughes + Vizcaino for Z if they had dangled that trade.

The Yankees have such a short memory...after 2004 they ran Vazquez out of there on a stick. Now, the ballpark they play in is even more homer-friendly, and they bring back Vasquez anyway. Good luck with that.

Kind of what I was thinking. He does have a tendancy to give up the long ball...although Soriano wasn't supposed to hit any HR's in Wahington either so you never know...but still a bit of a risk I think.

Considering that Zambrano is 5 years younger, under contract for four (?) more years, and has put up much better numbers over the course of his career, I'd say so.

Although, in reality, the Yankees probably had a basic package they were willing to give up and were looking for the best pitcher they could get for it. Zambrano was closer to the top of their shopping list than Vazquez was. When the Cubs' price was (justifiably) out of their range, they moved down the list.

I agree with that, but it was still an awful trade for Atlanta. Vazquez would have had another good year in ATL. I live in Columbia,SC, and they all wanted to win next year, I just don't see it now. They are trying to make room on their cap for a hitter, but they aren't going to get a top line hitter. Nice signing of Derek Lowe by the way. That was an awful, awful signing. Atlanta has too many starters, but they let the wrong one go.
