Pac-10 should ditch okie st and baylor and add KU and Mizzou if mizzou is being left out.

Kstate has to go along with you. No one wants Kstate. You're screwed.

i think the funniest part about this conference free-for-all is that one of the best schools in the country as far as academics/athletics combo (texas) is being saddled with other turds (baylor, texas tech) in their state.

If a school like KU is allowed into the CIC the University of Chicago's particle accelerator will explode.

lol

KU is a better school than Missouri. Rated higher in almost every rating guide, much larger endowment. If you can live w Missouri, you should be able to live KU from an academic standpoint.

I believe Kansas is tied to KSU. So they're screwed. What are KU's academic strengths? Not trying to be an [expletive] I just have no clue.

They have a strong debate team. I'm not sure what else, because all they have is billboard after billboard about the debate team.

that's categorically not true. The Kansas BOR said it would like to keep them together but it's not mandatory.

very well regarded in architecture, urban planning, print journalism, and special education. One of the top public business schools in the midwest. Has a law school that is pretty average I think. Also a med school and med center. don't know how they're regarded.

I'm not saying it's a Big 10 quality school--those schools all have much better reps. But its academic reputation is just as strong as the other public schools in the Big 12, aside from UT and aTm.

If that's the case KU needs to come out with a statement saying we tried to stay together, but it wasn't working. Then get in to one of the big conferences before you are stuck in the Mountain West.

Nebraska will be kind of cool for football. I grew up near there and hated them with a passion for years so that's good. I'm still kind of surprised at how interested the Big Ten was in them though. Really all they add is tradition in football. Now just add Notre Dame and Missouri and call it a day.

West- Nebraska, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, Notre Dame.

East- MSU, Michigan, OSU, Northwestern, PSU, Purdue, IU.

I hate the idea of Maryland and/or Rutgers. Yuck.

From Adam Rittenberg (who stays away from rumors):

ESPN.com[/url]"]The Big Ten is poised to expand to 12 teams, as Nebraska will apply for admission to the conference in the next few days, sources tell ESPN.com.

A source with knowledge of the Big Ten's plans tells me Nebraska should be a new member of the league by the end of the weekend. The formal application process likely has started or soon will begin, the source said, and Nebraska then would need at least eight votes from the Big Ten's Council of Presidents/Chancellors to gain admittance. Getting the votes should be more or less a formality.

I'm also told that right now, no other candidates are imminent to join the Big Ten. That means Missouri is far from a lock. Notre Dame? The Big Ten is prepared to move forward without the Irish for now.

Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany said Sunday that expansion could happen in phases. Nebraska is certainly Phase 1, but others could follow in the coming weeks and months.

We'll have much more on Nebraska in the next few days, as a formal announcement should be coming soon. I think Nebraska is a very strong addition to the league, which will be able to split into divisions and have a championship game.

I think it's too late for that. The perception has already killed us.

The poster on the Northwestern Rivals board that started the crapstorm in the Big Ten offices a few weeks ago over leaked information just had this to say:

Breaking: Big Ten Offers Texas, Texas A&M, Missouri and Notre Dame. Just spoke with my friend at the Big Ten. The offer to Missouri is contingent upon Texas joining. Will post more details as I hear.

I have a hard time buying it, but based on his track record, I can't say I'm ready to discard it just yet.

in addition to neb, or no neb?

In addition. Everyone's operating under the assumption that's a done deal.

He also had this to say:

The Big Ten has no word on whether Texas & Texas A&M will accept the offer. Apparently the two schools are meeting to jointly determine their course.

Everyone in the office on pins & nails. The admin has no predetermined backup plan if this fails. We should know in the next week or so.

I'd have to believe that Missouri would be contingent on Notre Dame, not Texas, since Texas and Texas A&M would push the conference to 14 teams. I can't see how they'd risk settling on 15.

Unless they're committed to not having divisions, in which case finishing with 15 teams and an open offer to Notre Dame would work just fine.

If they didn't care about the odd number, then why would Mizzou's invite be conditional?

It doesn't make a ton of sense. It's theorized that Missouri would partly serve as a geographic "link" to Texas, though that doesn't make a ton of sense. I can't imagine that Missouri's value as a link (just by looking at a map) would push them over the top and be more important than cable subscription revenue.

But it's also quite possible that adding Missouri as 13 would make the Big Ten less attractive for Notre Dame since they want as small of a conference as possible.

If Nebraska joins the Big 10 right away, how does that affect the schedule they already had for 2010? Won't they need to play more Big 10 teams?

2011 would be their first year, at least as far as football is concerned... not sure about other sports but i'd assume that they'd just do the 2010-11 academic year as part of the big xii and then make the move.

it's really weird to imagine not playing teams like Mizzou, Nebraska, OU, OSU and ISU.

They're mentioned in one of our fight songs. It's hard to imagine getting pumped to play the scrubs in whatever conference we end up in.

I think KU/NU was the longest uninterrupted rivalries. (Or one of them.) Over 100 years consecutively played.

Bums me out.
