Memphis has accepted an offer to join the Big East Conference in all sports in 2013, college football industry sources told CBSSports.com.

 

The Tigers will join the Big East with three other Conference USA members – Houston, SMU and UCF – for the 2013-14 school year. The Big East also will add Boise State and San Diego State as football-only members in 2013 and Navy in 2015.

At this point, the only real accurate conference name is Conference USA, mostly by default.

 

Big Ten - 12 teams

Big 12 - 10 teams

Big East - Now accepting SMU and Houston

Atlantic Coast - Now includes Pittsburgh

Pacific 12 - Now with Utah and Colorado

Southeastern Conference - I suppose Missouri is southeast of a few states.

Atlantic 10 - 14 teams

Mountain West - I suppose technically Hawaii is in the west, and it has a volcano...

Western Athletic Conference - Louisiana Tech in in the western half of Louisiana, I suppose

 

Heck, even the Sun Belt conference includes Western Kentucky.

I'd have mentioned San Diego State, but they're leaving. Hawaii is the biggest outlier in the MWC going forward, being nowhere near the Mountain time zone. Alternately, Fresno, CA isn't so much mountainous either.

Conference USA and the Mountain West Conference will be combined into one huge conference that will have a new name, multiple media outlets reported Monday.

 

An official announcement of the formation of the new conference could come as soon as Tuesday, according to ESPN.com.

 

The new conference probably will consist of 18 to 24 members and start in the 2013-14 academic year, and it will introduce a new format to determine its conference football champion.

I miss the old days when conferences were regional and made sense. Now the Big East stretches to freaking Boise, the SEC to Missouri and now a conference primarily based in the rockies region is going to merge with a primarily southeastern based conference.
