There is a quick way to tell now which journalists have made this devil's bargain and which ones haven't — the ones insisting that this "accident" is somehow "not a story" are the sopranos in the chorus.

If Esquire had all this information before, and didn't report on it, weren't they in on the devil's bargain?

If it wasn't worthy news when they knew it to be true, then why is it worthy news now? Too many times "journalists seem to go with this "I knew all about this, and it disgusted me" bit. Journalists are so in bed with the people they cover, afraid of losing a source by reporting anything, that it cracks me up to see them haw hawing at other journalists covering their asses.

my thoughts exactly. either run this stuff out there in advance of events and deal with the consequences, or shut up about it altogether.

didn't the author report this about Tiger long ago, which is why he was excluded by Tiger's people?

Boy Parnevik came out strongly against Tiger. But I guess it makes sense in that he set up Tiger and Elin.

That is pretty strong.

We probably thought he was a better guy than he is. I would probably need to apologize to her and hope she uses a driver next time instead of the 3-iron."

Something tells me Parnevik is worried about being in any final-round pairings with Tiger anytime soon. How fun would that be though?

He's Tiger freaking Woods. I'm not gonna get all indignant at the guy. It's like Michael. If you're that famous and rich and can have any woman you want, you almost have to do it. It's too bad that he's married and has young kids, but it's to be expected.

There again, I am admittedly morally bankrupt.

Parnevik shouldn't be too worried about being paired with Woods on the PGA Tour. Parnevik might not even be on the tour this year because he is in Q-school right now.

That Golf Digest cover is pretty neat looking though.

That's a pretty crappy photoshop job considering it's the actual cover.

Just imagine if this cover came out when Slick Willie was President instead of Obama. They definitely would have had something in common. :D

I can't really blame media members for not reporting on Tiger's affairs earlier, and then being more than happy to spill now. Once it gets to the point where the story is out there, and Tiger's wife attacks him and he ends up in the hospital, they should be free to report it, because it absolutely is a story. And all this talk about privacy is bunk. If you choose to make your living as a spokesperson, getting paid to tell people to buy products because you personally think they are quality products and use them, well then you are inviting people into your personal life, as you are selling yourself. You aren't a private citizen, you've given up the security of privacy for a hefty paycheck. It was your own choice. You can be a pro athlete, and pro athlete only, making millions while retaining a reasonable amount of privacy. But when you begin to sell yourself, you've surrendered a great deal of that privacy. And once your affairs get in the open and you wind up in a hospital because your wife attacked you, all bets are off.

Well what's the point of telling people, I knew all about this the entire time? What's the point of trying to paint yourself as some pulitzer winner for having the courage to report the story that the Enquirer is running with? The fight is news, the crash is news, the fact that you knew Tiger was cheating the whole time and didn't say anything, that's just masturbatory.

I don't know about that. I guess it depends on how it's portrayed, and I'm not sure what the specific example was that started this discussion. But a media member saying, "I was aware before but kept my mouth shut" isn't necessarily masturbatory.

low-speed, zero-casualty car crash creates a new form of background music.

I think people like Jon Stewart sound like idiots when they say something like this. It very clearly wasn't a low speed zero casualty car crash. The dude was clearly attacked by his wife with a golf club because she was livid that he was banging other chicks. Throw out the celebrity status and this story will make the news nearly any day of the week, especially a slow news day like Black Friday. There's a bajillion stations dedicated to telling news 24 hours a day, and several news programs morning day and night on other channels. There is all sorts of airtime to fill and not nearly enough news. Some will say things like "why not report on the economy or the war or climate change", which is just downright stupid since all of these stories are already talked about all the freaking time. There's absolutely nothing wrong with news organizations talking about this story. It's a billion dollar man who is the spokesperson for hundreds of billion dollars worth of companies who has always portrayed himself as an upright boring family man. It's a story, the fact that people are reporting on it is not a story.

Did you watch it? The whole point of the video was how the media was covering it, specifically baseless speculation, questioning of the baseless speculation, questioning of how big a story it is, and then going right back to baseless speculation. There was little actual reporting going on and that was the problem.

I did watch it, and in it he referred to the incident as a minor traffic accident in front of the guy's own house, acting as though it was something much less than what it really was. And it was just a bunch of blurbs from the media. It was pointless. It can be funny sometimes to take one second shots of every news organization saying the same thing, or saying something weird, but that was all they did and it was a really lame bit.

I don't see how what they did portrays any sort of problem.

It's the inherrent problem of our 24-news cycle that has the priority to entertain as opposed to just reporting. It would be one thing if they just reported the story (and yes, in the grand scheme of things of what should and can be dwelled on by news networks in this day and age it's a very minor story) and then updated it with new developments it would be one thing, but instead it becomes the dominating news story that eats up hour after hour of people talking about and speculating about it over and over again.

Yesterday morning on one of our local morning talk shows, a caller said he thought it was ridiculous that Tiger's crash was getting all this attention on CNN and all the other news outlets, while stories on the war in Afganistan are being ignored. He went on and on about how Tiger's tale (pun intended) shouldn't be newsworthy, blah, blah, blah.

Mikey (talk show host) says to the caller "you aren't interested in this Tiger stuff?"

Caller: Nope.

Mikey: Did you hear the voice mail Tiger left on his GF's phone?

Caller: Yeah

Mikey: Did you here the newest one?

Caller: No

Mikey: Do you want to hear it right now?

Caller: Yeah

Mikey: There isn't a new one. Gotcha!

I thought that was pretty hilarious.

As far as media sources staying mum on what they may know about Tiger's extra curricular activities, I can totally understand why they stayed quiet. If you want access to press conferences, interviews, etc... you can't be the guy who ruffles Tiger's feathers. You lose your access. And seeing a girl go into Tiger's room really isn't enough to generate a fact based article. The reporter would look pretty stupid and kill his career if he reported Tiger was fooling around when he has no idea what was going on in that room. Could have been Tiger's cousin in town for a visit.

Now that Tiger has allowed his private life to become public, all bets are off. While his PR team can still pick and choose what articles hit below the belt now that all of this is out in the open, most of these folks are basically spewing all the same stuff and probably won't be blacklisted from future press conferences, interviews, etc...
