when was the last time a relief pitcher won ROY?

That would be 4 years ago when Bailey's predecessor as Oakland closer, Huston Street won it.

Coghlan wasn't a bad choice, but he wasn't a good choice either. Hanson, Wells, and Jones were all much more deserving, IMO

Wells and Jones over Coghlan???

Hanson will be good/great, but I don't think he was good enough to merit the award.

Coghlan is the man, and absolutely deserves the honor.

Wells is a flash in the pan, I know I am the only one on this board with that feeling though.

It's not a best future career award. Wells and Happ both deserved it over Coghlan.

I knew I was forgetting someone.

You are not alone IMB I didn't know him either. Never even seen his name before.

Now that I have looked up his stats I am ashamed to have not known him.

sometimes, it's just that obvious.

Edit: Some moron did give Justin Verlander a first place vote over Greinke, though.

Eh, can't win them all. Heh.

Thank God.

"There's a lot of positive to it and a lot of negative to it -- not a lot but some," he said during a telephone conference call. "I really don't like having a bunch of attention."

Even before winning, this was sure to be a big week for Greinke. He is getting married Saturday to high school girlfriend Emily Kuchar, a former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader.

For all of the social anxiety problems he has I am a little surprised he is able to marry a former Cowboys Cheerleader. I remember some of the stories about him when he was taking time off.

who the [expletive] is Chris Coghlan

He is the anti-Cub:

.321/.390/.460 as a rookie. After the all-star break .377/.423/.520.

He absolutly deserved this award.

As an addendum to Greinke's award;

Use of Statistics Helps Greinke to Cy Young

“David DeJesus had our best zone rating,” Bannister said, referring to the Royals’ left fielder. “So a lot of times, Zack would pitch for a fly ball at our park instead of a ground ball, just because the zone rating was better in our outfield and it was a big park.”

To that end, Bannister introduced Greinke to FIP, or Fielding Independent Pitching, the statistic Greinke named Tuesday as his favorite. It is a formula that measures how well a pitcher performed, regardless of his fielders. According to fangraphs.com, Greinke had the best FIP in the majors.

“That’s pretty much how I pitch, to try to keep my FIP as low as possible,” Greinke said.

that is pretty awesome.
