and that opens the inside run, exactly what you want

The front 7 don't have to stay out to make screens a bad idea, they just have to realize that the quarterback still has the ball and it might be a good idea for some of them who aren't next to the QB to stay near the RB or whoever. In other news, the Bengals and Cardinals called about one screen against the Bears, a team that couldn't get anyone near the QB.

You'd think the Bears defensive line and the Packers offensive line would be instantly converted into pure energy when they came into contact, they're that perfectly matched as crappy opposites.

Hence they get no penetration and are still sitting at the line of scrimmage when you try to screen pass. The key to a good screen is allowing the d-line to penetrate but not far enough to get a sack.

well, if you try to screen against the Bears they'd let them penetrate and then everyone would be confused while the RB got 25 YAC

What a great win by the Cowboys. After the Denver loss, I was skeptical about the season, but they have looked pretty good since playing Atlanta three weeks ago.

If we can win next week at Green Bay, we'll be set pretty nicely having Washington and Oakland at home before going into the tough December schedule.

I'm happy with the win today. Vince started out a bit slow, but finished with a nice day - 12-19, 172 yards. More importantly, no turnovers by Vince and the 49ers got only one sack. Not turning the ball over will win a lot of games, especially if the defense continues to play at least decently.

Also, I love that Fisher incorporates option and zone read plays into the playbook with Vince in there. The option on fourth down that gave CJ his second TD was pretty awesome.

I bet we'll compete but you guys will pull away late.

I didn't get to see the game but my brother told me about that option play. Supposedly there were four 49ers in position and CJ made some cut and ran past them all.

As I told my brother I don't understand what the 49ers were thinking defensively (or offensively). All week I was reading quotes from Singletary about how they were doing things in practice to make sure they would contain VY and keep him from running. Why were they concentrating on VY? CJ is dominating. They should have come in with a plan to stack the box to stop the run and made VY beat them through the air.

This loss is on the coaches.

Parys Haralson was the only guy who had a real shot at CJ immediately, but CJ sidestepped him - putting him in a perfect position to slide along the sideline into the end zone. Without the cut that Parys necessitated, CJ probably doesn't even get the first down. He should have been stopped in the backfield.

They were pretty focused on stopping CJ and the run. Vince hit a couple deep balls throughout the game setting up scores and CJ broke a couple of long runs. Otherwise there wasn't much offense on the Titans' side.

The Saints have six defensive touchdowns on the year.

The Browns offense has five touchdowns.

Congrats Dew.

I'm officially completely and utterly fed up with the 49ers offense. Frank Gore is averaging 6.2 yards a carry the last two games yet has only got 14 rushes per game. WTF!?! What happened to the smack you in the mouth style offense Singletary? What's even more frustrating is we have led both the Titans and Colts the entire game heading into the fourth quarter. Also the Colts suck against power running. I am completely confused.

I guess they could have continued to try to force the ball to Gore in the Colts game, but the reason they went away from it is because after the big run in the first quarter, he was getting stuffed. Here are the rest of his runs for the day:

-1, 3, 1, 2, 2, 2, 2, -1, 3, 7

The big run inflated his stats, but the running game wasn't really moving the chains whatsoever in that game. They did try to line up and just run it on both 1st and 2nd down in 2 different drives and it led to 3rd and long both times and then 3 and outs.

So I agree with you a little bit (they probably should have tried 3-4 more runs during the course of the game) but I can't blame them too much because getting 2 yards a run is not going to get many drives started and Smith was throwing the ball well. I'm not sure what happened this week though.

I was hoping to win 2 out of 3 vs. Philly, Atlanta, and Green Bay. Now with a chance to win all 3 and move to 7-2 on the season is great.

Very true. Also, if we beat Green Bay, there's a good chance we could end up 9-2 with five games to play. After the Packers, the Boys have Washington at home and Oakland on Thanksgiving. So, the season is shaping up pretty good for the Cowboys. The game Sunday is big for us because even with the difficult last five (Redskins are the only weak team in that last stretch), if the Cowboys hit that final five with only 2 losses, we will be in a great position to claim a spot in the playoffs.

(not directed at you personally, but also of note)

Jairus Byrd and Darren Sharper have caught more passes than Darrius Heyward-Bey on the season

Yep, that's what I meant by that. You're right on the money.

Yeah I wasn't frustrated in the first half when they went away from the run when it stopped working. I was frustrated in the second half when they continued to pass on first, second and third down. They didn't move the ball in the second half, mainly because Indy started dropping back, and never went back to the run. That is just dumb. They should be stubborn with the run because it sets up everything else. Singletary said they would do just that and yet they haven't for weeks. Essentially the 49ers offense will come out doing one thing and when it stops working will switch to the other but then never adjust the rest of the game regardless of what happens.

I'm so confused by defensive coordinators disguising coverages and giving a variety of different combinations of down linemen and linebackers. I'm more used to Lovie running the same ineffective blitz packages and cover 2s.

I'll trade McCarthy for Lovie any day of the week.
