2011 is pretty short notice for football scheduling, but yeah, even if you have an open date scheduling Boise is an awful idea for a good BCS team. There's really no easy fix for this either, other than for Boise to keep winning every game (good likelihood of going undefeated this year + 21! returning starters next year = decent chance of this), or have the MWC take Boise and two more good CUSA/WAC teams and push for automatic status.

Boise, TCU, BYU, Fresno, Houston, Southern Miss would be a decent starting point for a new BCS conference.

2011 might be a good year to get them if they have 21 returning starters next season. I doubt a majority of those starters are fresh/soph.

I was researching via a website called FBSchedules.com to see what teams have Sept. 3, 2011 open (Boise's lone non-conference date that they're looking to fill) and was compiling a list but lost it all because of an accidental click elsewhere. But at least half the BCS conference teams have that date open as of now.

The first game of the year? After what they did to Oregon, teams are going to be even less likely to play them to start the year. Most teams are much better in November than they were in September, so I can't blame any team for not taking that game. If you're a contender, there is absolutely no upside to it.

What's the beef against Boise?

Just rooting for the underdog and don't think Boise deserves to be ranked in the top 10. They had one good win against Oregon to start the season and haven't played a good team since.

It's a tough spot for Boise though. What do they have to do to be highly ranked if they go by your criteria? What good team would want to play Boise State? Major conference teams don't gain anything from it...and they stand to potentially lose a lot.

They really need to get out of that conference.

I don't blame them for non-conference scheduling. We all know the situation there.

I just don't like the idea of someone playing 1 legit team at home and then 2 mediocre teams to go along with 9 patsies and being given a top 5 spot.

I get that...but what I'm saying is that Boise has done everything it can possibly do at this point. They can only play the teams on their schedule...the teams in their conference (crap, other than Fresno St occasionally, and maybe Hawaii occasionally), and the non-conference teams that are dumb enough to play them.

By the way, Boise State was ranked #9 in the country for this game:

They didn't play a ranked team all year that year...but went undefeated.

While you're not wrong, that one good win came against what may be the best team in the nation right now (yeah, I said it).

Ignoring where they are now, Oregon by no means was the best team in the country in September.

nothing personal, but i hope ohio state destroys penn state so i can see truffle and derwood cry.

I wouldn't cry. I'm not the cry in my beer, punch a hole in the wall type of sports fan. Nearly 25 years of rooting for Penn State has conditioned me to expect the team to crap the bed at least once or twice a year.

As the system is set up now, there is zero incentive to schedule Boise State, especially as an opening week game. If playing Troy and Charleston Southern can get you into the top 3 in the BCS, why schedule any team with an actual pulse?

I'm nervous as hell about this game. PSU is a very flimsy 8-1 (losing to the only ranked team they've played), so my confidence isn't as high as it should be. Hopefully PSU can contain Pryor's running game and make him throw (he's only a 50% passer his last 4 games and has a nearly 1:1 TD:INT ratio).

Interesting (to me) note: After PSU had losing seasons in 4 of 5 years (2000-2004) and everyone was calling for Paterno to hang it up, the team has played .800 football (48-12). I hope he coaches until he's a zombie, and then zombie coaches for another few decades.

Oh, definitely not. I am just reluctant to add that level of subjectivity to an already subjective system.

That's where the system has tremendous issues Boise and other non-BCS teams probably will never be able to do enough to warrant being one of the top 2 teams in the country as far as their schedule goes and there isn't much they can do about it.

Personally I think Penn State is better then when they played Iowa and may be the best team in the conference right now. Although it's really hard to judge them because they haven't played anyone outside of Iowa. I have a lot of faith that they'll beat Ohio State. It'll probably be a very similar game to the Iowa/Penn State game though because OSU's defense is really, really good.

I think the best solution to this Boise St "problem" is to just keep putting them in BCS games if they are undefeated. If a team with 1 or 2 loses from a "power" conference complains about Boise getting in ahead of them, then the tables need to be turned on them and ask why they and their conference buddies are not scheduling Boise fairly then.

To all you Illinois fans, you're welcome for Michigan waking you up last week. Too bad it didn't happen sooner in the season for you.

It would've been nice if we won against Indiana and Purdue. The defense actually looks like a legitimate unit today.

Stanzi is hurt?

That might not be a bad thing.

I don't know. He had that horrible 3rd quarter last week, but wasn't taken out of the game. That might hint at how far behind the backup is.
