Lou sure is a genius huh? Weurtz, while actually getting regular work, went on to be a dominant guy out of the pen, while we ran Aaron Heilman, Jeff Samardja, David Patton, and Kevin Gregg out there on a consistent basis to get rocked. Good call Lou and Jim.

Lou manages to even mismanage a good bullpen when he has one, so God help the team he manages that has only an average or below average one.

I have no idea why Lou seemed to think Wuertz was a guy to be used pretty much only to put out fires and bring him in with people already on base.

Scott "Stevie" Eyre in an injury plagued season in Philadelphia:

28.0 innings pitched

1.61 era

1.25 whip

3 hrs

20 k's

14 bb

The next GM could be worse.

Consistently replacing young, cheap, decent (or good) bullpen arms with older, expensive, mediocre (or bad) ones. One of this organizations more confounding philosophies.

Sadly, the ripple effect that these decisions have made can never be quantified. What moves could have been made with the money and players used?

Allocating this team's massive budget properly would result in easy playoff appearances nearly every year. I don't understand how someone in the organization doesn't see that.

This is kinda ridiculous.

I'll give you Michael Weurtz, he got a raw deal and should still be here.

Everybody was calling for Eyre to get released. Nobody gave 2 craps about Aardsma.

correct, Eyre sucked and Aardsma got let go by Kenny Williams and GMJesus before he found a home in Seattle.

Maybe it has to do with the extremely flukey nature bullpens are.

We have to keep Hendry, the next guy could be worse.

Nobody's said that.

I haven't said it in this thread, but I have said something that could be misconstrued for that if one were really, really dumb.

Namely, that firing Hendry for the sake of firing him doesn't do us any good if don't hire a better GM. I wouldn't really see the point of firing Hendry if the best replacement we can muster is Jim Bowden, for instance.

This isnt a case of, oh man, we shouldnt of let that guy go, who knew he'd be so good, bla bla. We all said at the time it was stupid. And it was.

I dooooo draw the line at bringing up Aardsma though. That's reaching.

Exactly. I said something somewhat similar where I don't see the point of firing Hendry now if there's no significant payroll for a new GM to work with. It seems redundant to saddle a new GM with Hendry's mess without the financial means to do anything about it. I've also said that while I'm not opposed to Hendry ultimately being fired I have little confidence that his replacement will be any better.

I've got confidence he couldn't be too much worse. If we operate under this philosophy of fear, this team will never improve.

Awful deal by Hendry, no excuses. However, you guys are reaching with Eyre and Aardsma. Aardsma was traded about 10 years ago and sucked with 3 different teams and Eyre sure looked washed up when we traded him.

For the pen next year I'd like to see something like this:

Marmol

Guzman

Grabow

Caridad

Marshall

Gaub

Stevens

No need to waste money on a free agent when we have plenty of in house options.

Hendry had a choice of keeping Eyre or that other terrible LH that got hurt toward the beginning of this season whose name I seem to have blocked from my memory. Neither were great options but a lot of people were surprised/ disappointed that Eyre was the one that had to go.

What "philosophy of fear?" Nobody is afraid of firing Hendry.

I wanted to keep Eyre and give Howry the boot. They released the wrong guy last year.

What did you guys expect? We all knew Wuertz was at the very least decent but Lou didn't like him for some reason and told Jimbo to move him. Just another offseason move by one of the worst GM's in baseball that didn't work out.

So instead we give him one more year to put a different set of limitations on the next guy? I mean what do you let him keep going, but not make any more moves? Because any moves he makes this offseason would then limit the team for another year going forward. When would it ever be ok to fire him then? He's always going to have given out contracts that extend into the future.

I love that Jim could eat Eyre's contract, but wouldn't Neifi's. The guy that had some value to the team, no problem we'll send him packing. The troll that saved us, no way, not going anywhere.

Why is it reaching? Hendry is the paid professional. He's supposed to be able to see the upside these guys have. He's the one constantly looking for bullpen help. Why shouldn't he be criticized for letting quality arms go for crap when he's constantly bringing in others?
