I never followed Colvin much, but I do know he had that elbow reconstruction not to long ago. How much of his initial sucktitude with us had to do with that? Was the second half just him finally being past the injury (kind of like DLee and his wrist) or a flash in the pan, or a little bit of both?

Maybe I'm the typical over-optimistic Cubs fan, but Wilken did have a great history with Toronto on his first round picks, so I'm hopeful he could be back on track to being a legit major leaguer.

Flash in the pan. He blows worst first round pick ever.

He actually had two major injuries this season. The first was Tommy John, which he had in the offseason and, apparently, he was slow to recover from it. There were some questions about how much it affected his performance last season, although it's unclear about how much it affected him and what parts of his game were affected. The second injury was a head-on collision back around April/May, where he and Daytona OF Tony Campana collided in the outfield. Both had to go to the hospital, with Colvin taking the worst of the impact. I believe he sustained a rather serious concussion from that collision.

So, my gut is that it took him some time to fully recover from both injuries.

He played through elbow pain all of the 2008 season before finally getting TJS in the offseason. Even before that, he was on the DL in 2007 during his first stint at AA with a sore elbow. And as Outshined_One mentioned, he took a while to recover from the offseason TJS and concussion this season.

He still played over his head in the second half of the season and is unlikely to sustain that level of play without improving his patience.

So a little bit of both. Still sounds like an interesting guy to follow, if for no other reason it was an unusual gamble for Wilkin.

Not really. It pretty much fits his drafting policies perfectly. Vitters was a bigger departure.

I think Jehrico was more getting at the fact that a very large number of people thought Colvin was a reach at the time he was drafted.

As do Lou Montanez, Bobby Brownlie, Ryan Harvey, and Mark Pawalek.

Let me guess you prolly would have rather drafted Frank Thomas than Earl Cunningham? Your loss.

Those two were in the same draft class? Yikes.

I think they were back to back picks. Actually though the Sox picked one spot in front of us.

We also were back to back in the 88 draft. We picked Griffin then the Sox picked Robin Ventura.

If it makes you feel any better, between Thomas at #8 and Mo Vaugh and Chuck Knoblauch at 23 and 25 respectively there really wasnt much to speak of in that draft.

Thanks. Although he kinda worded it weird. Lucky for me you were here.

Also Charles Johnson and Cal Eldred say hello.

Im not going to lose a wink of sleep over Cal Eldred, but Johnson would have been an upgrade over every catcher we had between Jody Davis and Geovany Soto, aside from Rick Wilkens 1 good year, and Joe Girardi and Damon Berryhill need not say hi.
